Gil Gerard, the actor forever linked to Captain William “Buck” Rogers, has died at age 82.
His death followed a brief but brutal battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, his wife, Janet Gerard, announced on Facebook.
“Early this morning Gil - my soulmate - lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer,” Janet wrote in a message shared on Tuesday, December 16. “From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days. No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough. Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely.”

Gerard was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1943, and his path to becoming a sci-fi favorite was a long one that started with small acting jobs in New York before he found the role that changed everything. He started his career in commercials and daytime dramas like Another World and The Doctors before landing guest spots on Little House on the Prairie, CHiPs, and Hawaii Five-O.
However, it was Buck Rogers in the 25th Century that made Gerard a household name. Originally released as a 1979 TV movie that rode the Star Wars wave into theaters, the project became a two-season NBC series that blended futuristic adventure with a type of disco-esque charm and helped define televised science fiction for a generation. Gerard’s take on Buck Rogers made him a fan favorite, and he stayed connected to the sci-fi community for years through conventions and anniversary events.
