Women’s basketball thwarts Sam Houston at home

Alabama women’s basketball crushed the Sam Houston Bearkats 73-36 inside Coleman Coliseum Tuesday night.

Head coach Kristy Curry said she was proud of her team’s effort in what was the Crimson Tide’s 12th consecutive win to open the 2025 season.

Curry’s team got right to work, sprinting out to a 12-2 lead in less than three minutes. A 3-pointer from guard Ta’mia Scott forced a flustered Sam Houston team to call a timeout.

Alabama ended the quarter up 21-10 after the Bearkats applied some defensive pressure which impeded the Crimson Tide’s ability to stretch the floor and its lead. Alabama looked stellar defensively in the first quarter, forcing five turnovers and scoring 7 points off of those Bearkat giveaways.

“I think that we just had a really good game plan,” Scott said. “They don’t have many outside shooters that can hurt us, so we just did a really good job in our zone and just communicating and doing good on defense.”

The second quarter got off to a similar start to the first as the Crimson Tide opened the frame with a 9-2 run to take a 30-12 lead with 6 minutes left in the half.

Alabama took a 47-18 lead into the locker room, playing with a heightened energy in comparison to the team’s effort against Jackson State on Sunday.

Curry stressed the importance of being better as far as having energy and effort down the stretch and added that she has “loved the response the past couple days.”

The Crimson Tide outrebounded the Bearkats 29-8 and pulled down 11 offensive boards in the first half. Alabama also started to get hot from deep, sinking 6/12 3-point attempts, four of which came from Scott.

Despite increased pressure defensively by Sam Houston, Alabama continued to lead big through the third quarter, taking a 61-26 lead into the final frame after the team shot 4/7 from deep and pulled down six offensive rebounds.

A lot of depth players saw time on the floor throughout the fourth quarter as the Crimson Tide coasted to a blowout victory.

Curry mentioned that her team is “wounded”, referencing injuries that players are dealing with. She said that all of the depth players on the team “stepped up” in extended minutes.

Guard Ace Austin, who played throughout most of the game and scored tied for a team-high 12 points, said that her coaches “harped” on her and her teammates to not get complacent as the lead continued to grow.

The Crimson Tide will have a short turnaround and will play tomorrow, Dec. 17, versus Tulane inside Coleman Coliseum. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT and will be streamed on SEC Network+.
