Three Weld County residents have been sentenced for distribution of fentanyl that led to the 2021 death of a teenage girl.
Destiny Salazar, 36, and Gabriel Orozco, 36, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and distribution of fentanyl, according to a Monday news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. Salazar was sentenced to 12 years in prison and Orozco was sentenced to 14 years in prison by Senior U.S. District Judge John Kane. Both will also serve 10 years of supervised release after their prison sentences end.
From July to December 2021, Salazar and Orozco engaged in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl using Facebook, cell phones and emails, according to the release. One of their customers, Kaleb Hale, 23, made two purchases on July 24, 2021. Hale and his 16-year-old girlfriend traveled to a home in Greeley where they crushed one of the pills and snorted a portion. Hale woke up in severe abdominal distress and his girlfriend died during the night of fentanyl intoxication.
Hale was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison, followed by six years of supervised release by Chief United States District Judge Philip Brimmer during a Sept. 19 proceeding, where Hale pleaded guilty for distribution of fentanyl to a person under 25 years of age.
“This case should be a warning to drug users and dealers alike. Using even the smallest amount of fentanyl can have deadly consequences. Dealing this dangerous drug can put you in federal prison for a very long time,” United States Attorney for the District of Colorado Peter McNeilly said in the Tuesday news release.
