ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Strong announced it received a $15,000 grant from the Golisano Foundation to support its Generation Two also known as “G2” inclusive volunteering program.
The G2 program will team up with local organizations to train individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to become volunteers. These volunteers will participate in 1:1 child-directed play sessions in K-2 classrooms, serving as “play-buddies” in three elementary classrooms.
“The G2 program improves the well-being of students in the Rochester area through the power of one-on-one, child-directed play but it also provides a sense of connection and community for our many volunteers,” said Cathy DeBellis, The Strong’s assistant vice president for education and public programs.
DeBellis expressed gratitude to the Golisano Foundation for the grant, which will help The Strong work with organizations like CSD Monarch and Starbridge to support the inclusive volunteering program. This initiative will allow individuals with IDD to create connections, serve their community, and develop key social skills through play.
