Revamping the State of Pitching, the 10-Year Anniversary Tour is Coming, Darvish, and Other Cubs Bullets

You know the part in the zombie movie where there’s a chaotic moment, and the family only just barely escapes a hoard. Then, after they’ve safely barricaded themselves in a house, one of them hides away in a corner, slowly pulling up their sleeve to reveal a bite mark? And you know the whole family is eventually cooked?

Yeah, that was us this weekend when our youngest barfed a second time. She got bit, and upon that reveal, it was clearly only a matter of time before the norovirus got the rest of us. Which it did, quickly and harshly. Thing went 5 for 5 like it was prime Ichiro. Knock on wood, but we all seem to be mostly on the other side of it now, and I feel capable of returning to full action here. Though I do feel a little out of the loop, so I need to mentally catch back up. Thanks to Michael for filling in on the Bullets while I was buried under a storm of unpleasantness.

We learned a couple weeks ago that the Cubs were losing Director of Pitching Ryan Otero to the Red Sox, where he would reunite with former Cubs Senior Vice President of Pitching Craig Breslow, who runs the whole show up there in Boston. In tandem with that news, we learned that Tyler Zombro would be taking on an expanded role with the Cubs, and now we know more about that as well:

After being pursued by the Nats early last month, the Cubs are keeping Tyler Zombro and naming him VP of pitching. Already impactful on MLB side, he now has significant influence throughout the organization after just one year on staff. t.co/NjsUYFmMDP

    — Sahadev Sharma (@sahadevsharma) December 13, 2025 Interesting that the Nationals wanted Zombro as their pitching coach with the ability to contribute throughout the org (kinda sounds like what Tommy Hottovy does with the Cubs), and the Cubs responded by giving him a significant bump in title and responsibility after just one year with the organization (his first year as a full-time employee with any MLB organization). Also interesting that it sounds like the Zombro transition preceded the Otero departure, not the other way around. Makes you wonder if Zombro was being elevated to the top of the organizational pitching chart and the Cubs allowed Otero to depart for another gig on that basis. In any case, the significance of this move can’t be overstated, given the reach of Zombro’s role, and given the divergence in success lately between the big league side and the minor league side. The 31-year-old will now work in all phases of scouting and player development throughout the organization, from drafting individual players, to working on their development plans, to coaching and coordinator hires. The Cubs’ pitching at the minor league level has fallen off the last couple years (maybe not coincidentally since Breslow’s departure), and it’s on Zombro to help bring it back. No pressure. More from Sahadev Sharma here at The Athletic. The Cubs dropped an early preview of some of the panels at Cubs Convention this year, and no surprise, the 2016 team is going to be featured prominently:

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) December 15, 2025 The 10-year anniversary stuff is going to be EVERYWHERE next year, and why shouldn’t it be? It was kind of a big deal. I can’t wait to reminisce in all of it. That said, I hope it also all comes with a distinct sense of, “ooh, could they do it again this year? Win it all again on the 10th anniversary of the last time they won it all?” So, it would probably behoove the Cubs to make a few more additions from there this offseason, eh? And then those guys can also show up at Cubs Convention for a different panel, welcoming the new players. Speaking of beloved former Cubs, albeit not a member of the 2016 team, I really hope this isn’t the end of the road for Yu Darvish, but the math is unkind:

Speaking today at a charity event, Yu Darvish said he is focused on his rehab and unsure if he will try to pitch again after the process is complete. Darvish, 39, underwent surgery in October to repair a flexor tendon and the UCL in his right elbow.

    — Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) December 15, 2025 Even with a strong recovery and rehab, it’s possible Darvish wouldn’t pitch in 2026 at all. So then it’s 2027, when he’ll have already turned 40, and coming back from surgery. It’s a long way off, and a lot to ask of a guy who’s already had so much success in his career. That said, he’s still under contract with the Padres (on that extremely improvident extension) through 2028. So if he wants to keep trying, they basically have to at least give him a shot. They’d be paying him either way. An early heads up for the 2027 draft class:
