Why Rob Reiner Admitted Feeling Jealous of Steve Martin

Beloved director and actor Rob Reiner, who was pronounced dead on December 14 at the age of 78, was the son of comedian and actor Carl Reiner.

In a March 2016 interview on The Howard Stern Show, hosted by Howard Stern, Reiner spoke about having a famous father. While speaking to Reiner, Stern referenced that actor and comedianSteve Martin, 80, had a close working relationship with Carl. Reiner noted that his father directed Martin in "four pictures," including 1979's The Jerk.

When Stern asked if he felt "tremendous jealousy" about his father's dynamic with Martin, Reiner replied, "There was."

"I say, 'Yes, I had a different relationship with my father but I would have loved to have had what that was.' But it's what it is," explained Reiner during the interview.

Stern said he empathized with Reiner, stating, "because Steve becomes like the favorite son."

"He's like the son that you wish you had who could do shtick and do all that stuff," replied Reiner.

Carl honored Martin during the AFI Life Achievement Award: Tribute to Steve Martin in 2020. During his speech, Carl complimented Martin for his acting abilities.

"Steve is one of these actors who you don't tell them what to do. You choose from what he does and say, 'Yeah do that.' All I had to do was point the cameras at the most versatile human being there is on our planet," said the late writer.

In addition, he told Martin that he loved him.

Rob Reiner Said He Felt Competitive Toward His Father

During the Howard Stern Show interview, Reiner said he felt competitive toward his father, who died at the age of 98 in 2020, because of his success and hard work in Hollywood. The Princess Bride director shared that he would often visit the set of the 1960s sitcomThe Dick Van Dyke Show, which his father created, to watch Carl work.

"I remember one time walking into his office and sitting down. He wrote 20-25 scripts every year by himself. And I sat behind his desk. And I was like 14-15 years old, I said 'How the hell am I going to do this?'" recalled Reiner during the 2016 interview.

Reiner also said that his father didn't find him funny during his childhood. He said Carl's friend, writer Norman Lear, was the first person to realize the strength of his humor when he "was like nine, eight-years old."

"I was playing Jacks with his daughter right, explaining the rules to her. And apparently I made Norman laugh. He says to my father, 'You know what that kid, he's really funny.' And my father said 'What are you crazy?'" said Reiner to Stern.

Reiner later starred as Michael "Meathead" Stivic in Lear's hit '70s sitcom, All in the Family.

Reiner also shared that he once pitched a joke to his father and his comedy partner, Mel Brooks, when he "was like 16" for a six-minute segment on The Ed Sullivan Show.

"They actually used it. That was like the greatest thrill," said Reiner during the Howard Stern Show interview.
