Trap game. Must-win game. Rome Odunze ruled out just before kickoff game. Myles Garrett’s potential NFL sack record game. Freezing-cold home game against a 3-10 Browns team led by Shedeur Sanders. Whatever. None of it mattered. With a little help from two perfectly timed interceptions, the Chicago Bears dominated the Cleveland Browns today at Soldier Field. And after weeks of nail-biting, last-minute decisions, that win was a thing of (relaxing) beauty.
We deserved that.
FINAL: Chicago Bears 31, Cleveland Browns 3 (ESPN BOX SCORE)
Thoughts on the Bears Win
That game was pretty much a joy from start (a 52-yard kick-off return) to finish (Shedeur Saners getting sacked for minus-5 yards in the red zone). Though I do want to note the importance of the first two Bears interceptions (there were THREE total on the day, because that’s just what they do). After getting out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to some sloppy play (penalties, personnel issues) by the Browns, the Bears stalled out a little bit. Cairo Santos missed a field goal (it was freezing cold, but … it was also only 31 yards), there was a three-and-out, and then the first half ended with the Bears coming up short of points. After the half, the Bears had another turnover on downs, the Browns hit a 50-yard field goal, and the Bears turned it over again. I’m not saying anyone was sweating — the Bears were still very much in control — but they didn’t quite break things open like we thought they might. And then everything changed. Seven minutes into the 3rd quarter, D’Marco Jackson popped a Sanders’ pass in the air and came down with it. And on the VERY next play, Caleb Williams made an incredible (and dangerous) throw to DJ Moore for a touchdown. I went through all the emotions on that play, from questioning why Ben Johnson abandoned the run, to thinking Williams was picked off in the end zone, to celebrating Moore’s great catch. But that wasn’t the last time a Bears pick stole the momentum.CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 15 INSTANT GRADES
On the next drive, Sanders completed a deep, 47-yard pass to Isiah Bond over the middle. And, again, while no one thought that was the Browns getting themselves back in the game, it definitely breathed some life into Cleveland. But a few plays later, on what looked like a Browns’ touchdown, Jaylon Johnson took the ball out of Jerry Jeudy’s hands for a touchback. Nine plays and 80 yards later, the Bears had another touchdown. So that stretch went interception, touchdown, interception, touchdown. And suddenly, the big lead we were hoping for was there. After that, it was nothing but garbage time. CJ Gardner-Johnson picked off Sanders, Santos hit a field goal, and eventually the Browns ran out of time. So, yeah, there were a ton of bright spots on offense for the Bears today, but those first two big plays by the defense really defined the game. Every time the Browns had anything cooking, Chicago stopped them in their tracks. We’ve seen it all season, but man does this team love hunting takeaways. We’ll get into some individual performances in a second, but I’ll add that Caleb Williams (17/28, 242 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT) probably could have had an even better day if it weren’t for a few drops. Kyle Monangi, who had a quiet afternoon, dropped what looked like a big opportunity on the first drive of the game and Luther Burden let one bounce off his hands later. It was freezing cold out there today, though, so we’ll cut them some slack. Either way, Williams looked good and in control, and had more than enough big chunk plays to keep the offense rolling.BEARS HIGHLIGHTS: D’Andre Swift Scores the First TD | Williams Connects with DJ Moore for the TD | Williams’ Insane TD Throw to Moore | D’Andre Swift Scores Again

We could write about Caleb Williams today, he was calm, cool, and in control from start to finish. But let’s focus on a few other standouts.
D’Andre Swift — What an incredible game from D’Andre Swift. He came up two yards shy of 100, but he was absolutely cooking this afternoon, running hard, finding holes, and pushing through tackles for touchdowns. He’s had a good season in general, but he stood out to me today. The running game is always important, but that goes double when it’s freezing cold (and when Kyle Monangi couldn’t really get anything going). Huge effort from Swift, huge impact, too.
Colstand Loveland — Loveland didn’t score today, but he made four catches for 63 yards, showing off some really excellent hands in the process. Caleb loves looking to his TEs when he needs to get a first down, and Loveland helped him out this afternoon. He even had a designed run, but Cole Kmet missed a block and it didn’t wind up going for much. Still fun to see.
DJ Moore — After being a frustrating non-factor against the Packers last week, all eyes were going to be on DJ Moore today … and that was BEFORE Rome Odunze was ruled out just before kick off. How did he respond? With four receptions and two touchdowns for 69 total yards. Luter Burden III caught more and gained more ground, but Moore came up big twice, especially on that needle-threading throw from Williams. That had to feel great.
