Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle Stats: Tense and Tight Tyne-Wear Derby Decided by Nick Woltemade Own Goal

The first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby in nearly a decade did not disappoint.

A hotly anticipated affair, the first in the top flight since March 2016 and played with the rivals separated by a single point in the middle of the Premier League table, had even more riding on it than bragging rights.

Sunderland had stuttered somewhat after impressing so much in the early days of their return to the Premier League, winning just one of their previous six before this game, but they remained in a fairly unfamiliar position – at least in recent times – of being above their rivals. Newcastle, now a Champions League team, would have been desperate to reassert their superiority with a win.

But this was always going to be a tough assignment for Eddie Howe’s side. The Stadium of Light was bouncing, and the hosts were making no efforts to be hospitable, refusing somewhat pettily to name their opponents on their scoreboard inside the ground, which merely referred to Newcastle as the “Visitors”.

The match began in a predictably cagey manner, with both sides keen to keep it tight at the back, and creating little of note as a result. The first half broke a couple of unwanted records.

It took until the 22nd minute for the first shot of the game (Enzo Le Fee for Sunderland), which was the longest wait for a game’s first shot in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, no other game this season has had fewer shots or touches in the opposition’s box as this one did in the first half.

Newcastle found it particularly difficult to get going. They have failed to attempt a shot in the opening 30 minutes of a Premier League game for the first time since November 2024 (vs Crystal Palace).

But there was a simmering tension to the match throughout, and the spark that brought it properly to life came just 59 seconds into the second half as Nick Woltemade headed a Nordi Mukiele cross into his own net. It was just the second own goal scored in this fixture in the Premier League, after Demba Ba in October 2012.

Newcastle possess more than enough attacking talent to work their way back into a game like this, but Sunderland almost completely shut them down. They made the game incredibly uncomfortable for their fierce rivals, and even though Newcastle had to come out and attack to try and find an equaliser, clear-cut chances eluded them entirely. Woltemade’s first-half effort (worth just 0.02 xG) was the only shot that any of their six forward players managed all game.

Tensions boiled over in second-half stoppage time as Sunderland did everything in their power to slow the game down and stifle their opponents, and frustration got the better of Newcastle. The yellow-card tally for the game shot up to nine, as Sunderland saw out a historic victory.

It was nothing less than you’d expect from a game like this after a decade-long wait for a top-level meeting. With relegation looking extremely unlikely for either side, we should be treated to a few more of them in years to come.

Sunderland vs Newcastle Stats: Post-Match Facts

It took until the 22nd minute for the first shot attempt of this game (Enzo Le Fee for Sunderland); the longest wait for a game’s first shot in the Premier League this season.
