A member of Syria’s General Security was killed and four US soldiers, along with two Syrian army personnel, were injured in the city of Palmyra (Tadmur, in eastern Homs province, central Syria).
The incident resulted from an attack targeting a US military convoy in Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside on 13 December.
According to an Enab Baladi correspondent, US forces entered Palmyra openly, deep into Syria’s Badia, in a convoy of around 15 US military vehicles. The convoy was accompanied by Syrian army vehicles coming from the al-Tanf base on the border strip.
Unknown motives
The correspondent said US forces carried out a joint patrol, accompanied by the Syrian army stationed in Palmyra.
The area also saw the Deir Ezzor–Homs road, passing through Palmyra, closed for an hour and a half, before US forces returned to the al-Tanf base.
This coincided with low altitude, heavy flights by the International Coalition’s warplanes over the area.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) confirmed that Syrian security forces and US forces came under gunfire on Saturday by an armed man near Palmyra while carrying out a joint field tour.
Citing a security source, the agency said the incident resulted in the injury of two Syrian security personnel and several members of the US forces, while the shooter was killed.
No additional information has been released so far regarding the motives behind the incident or its circumstances.
The source added that traffic on the Deir Ezzor–Damascus international highway was temporarily halted due to the incident, alongside intensive aircraft activity in the area’s airspace.
The source said US helicopters intervened to evacuate the injured to the al-Tanf base following the shooting.
Syria had announced joining the International Coalition to combat the Islamic State group, coinciding with an official visit by Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to the White House on 10 November.
US forces first entered northeastern Syria in 2014 as part of the International Coalition, which includes around 80 countries and was formed to fight the Islamic State group in Syria.
Since then, US forces have operated alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), providing military and logistical support in battles against the Islamic State group in northeastern Syria, before operations began with the new authorities in Damascus.
The United States has several bases and military points inside Syria, with its presence concentrated mainly in the country’s northeast.
According to a report issued by the Jusoor Studies Center in September 2024, the number of US bases stands at 17, in addition to 15 military points.
