As fans around the world continue to mourn the loss of Raul Malo, who lost his battle with cancer on December 8, his band The Mavericks has shared both an emotional tribute to their late frontman and details about his upcoming funeral service.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the band thanked fans for the overwhelming outpouring of love following Malo’s death and reflected on the immeasurable impact he had—not just as a musician, but as a human being.
“Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for the kind words and condolences on the passing of our brother Raul,” the band wrote. “It’s been humbling, though not surprising, to see the remembrances of him come in from around the world. Truly, there was no corner of our universe untouched by the joy and light he brought forth, and while we mourn his passing from this realm, we give thanks that his battle is over, and his voice graces the Heavenly choir now. He is so dearly missed.”

The Mavericks also reflected on the two-night tribute held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium just days before Malo’s passing, calling the shows a profound family reunion honoring the man affectionately known as “El Maestro.”
“We want to thank all the guest artists, friends, family, and everyone who joined us in Nashville for two nights this past weekend,” the band continued. “These were some of the most special shows we have ever played, and a true family reunion in celebration of El Maestro and his legacy of music.”
They added that Malo’s presence was felt deeply throughout both nights.

“Let there be no doubt Raul’s spirit was there with us in the Mother Church, felt so powerfully amongst the family, friends, and fans that loved him.”
For fans who were unable to attend or watch live, the band confirmed that full video of both tribute shows remains available to stream on demand through Dec. 31 via Nugs.
Funeral Mass Details Announced
In a separate announcement, the Malo family shared plans for a funeral mass honoring the beloved singer.
The service will take place on December 18, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of Incarnation in Nashville, Tennessee. Guests are asked to arrive by 1 p.m. to allow time for parking and seating.
Seating will be prioritized for family and friends, with a private reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to MusicCares or Blackbird Academy.

Remembering a Life on the Road
Tributes have continued to pour in from fellow musicians who shared decades of life and music with Malo. Saxophonist Max Abrams offered a vivid remembrance that captured the scope of Malo’s journey and the bond forged on the road:
“We played stadiums and VFW halls. Rolled through blizzards in Fargo and flaming vineyards in Napa. Broke down in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Drank Champagne in Spain. Played Stardust in a hotel bar in Scotland. Won a bar fight in New Orleans. Didn’t get arrested in Denmark. Jammed with Willie in Dallas. Saw the Aurora Borealis above the Arctic Circle. Ate croissants in Paris. Played Guantanamera in Havana.”
Abrams continued:
“Raul got a 9-piece band through 1,549 damn good shows. He cracked 12 notes in 13 years. He never stopped growing as a musician, or as a person. He stayed friends with people that loudly disagreed with him. He played the best version of Stardust I’ve ever heard. He knew the best restaurant in London and Lincoln. He could casually wear an ascot. And, god, that voice.”

He concluded simply: “All the sadness in the world. All the gratitude there could ever be. Onward.”
Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Malo co-founded The Mavericks in 1989 and helped shape one of the most adventurous and genre-defying sounds in modern American music. Over more than three decades, his operatic baritone and boundless joy earned him Grammy, CMA, and ACM Awards—and the devotion of fans across generations.
Now, as his family, bandmates, and fans prepare to say goodbye, the words shared by The Mavericks linger: Raul Malo’s battle is over—but his music, his spirit, and his voice live on.
