A former Chicago man is facing between 18 to 90 years in prison after he was found guilty Thursday of a shooting that occurred during a children’s birthday party at a suburban indoor amusement park in 2021.
Meco Norris, 29, was found guilty of three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm that resulted in severe bodily injury to the victim, each count a Class X Felony requiring mandatory consecutive sentencing by law.
Around 6:56 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2021, authorities responded to a call of shots fired at Safari Land amusement park, located at 701 West North Avenue in Villa Park. Authorities learned that Norris and the man he shot were at the amusement park for a birthday party
Norris pulled out a handgun and shot the victim three times, one in the chest, once in the shoulder and once in the arm, authorities said. After the shooting, Norris fled into the neighborhood behind the amusement park and concealed the firearm.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since recovered from his injuries, authorities said.
Norris was arrested the following day at his Chicago residence.
“What began as a fun night out for dozens of families at a popular indoor children’s amusement park, ended in terror when Meco Norris pulled out a loaded handgun and shot another man three times,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “Mr. Norris’ utter disregard for public safety was on full display as he repeatedly fired his gun, just feet from dozens of innocent children and their families.”
Norris’ guilty verdict follows a four-day bench trial that concluded on Nov. 24, according to the DuPage State’s Attorney’s Office. He has remained in custody since his bond was set at $1 million on Nov. 15.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 4, followed by a sentencing hearing on Feb. 18.
