This 70s Rocker Was Voted Most Underrated Guitarist of All Time

If one were to put a group of random classic rock fans in a room and ask them to agree on the "best" guitarist of all time, it's unlikely that they'd ever be able to settle on an answer. Of course, there would be the obvious choices — Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen — but what about the unsung heroes of guitar rock?

When Ultimate Guitar asked their readers to vote for the most underrated guitarist of all time, there were — unsurprisingly — a wide variety of nominees, from Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest to Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme to Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. But one talented axe man reigned supreme, nabbing the top spot on a list of 25 musicians: Alex Lifeson of Rush.

As UG's David Slavković wrote, "Now, we here are all aware of his impeccable guitar playing and composing skills. However, it seems that he never got enough time under the spotlight since everyone's been focusing on [singer /bass player] Geddy Lee and [drummer] Neil Peart."

Slavković went on to declare Lifeson one of the "most innovative, influential, and underrated guitar players of all time."

Alex Lifeson started playing the guitar at 12 years old

In an interview with Q's Tom Power, Lifeson opened up about developing an obsession with playing guitar at the age of 12, noting that all he ever wanted to do after school was practice his instrument.

"I immediately went upstairs, played guitar till dinner, had dinner and then immediately played guitar till I was supposed to do my homework," the Canadian rocker explained. "[I] didn't do my homework. I just couldn't stop playing. Every chance I got, I played."

Lifeson's teenage passion for guitar was captured in the 1973 documentary Come on Children, which was directed by the Canadian filmmaker Allan King, and focused on the real-life experiences of 10 teenagers.

"The premise was 10 kids from all different parts of the city moving in together in a farmhouse," Lifeson recalled. "Unfortunately, it was really boring, nothing really happened...About halfway through, I guess, our parents were invited to tour the farmhouse — it was in Newcastle, Ont. — [to] just see what we were doing."

In the doc, a teenaged Lifeson can be seen arguing with his parents about his future, saying, "I don't want to make a bunch of money. Like, if I make a lot of money, that's great. But I'm not going to go to university and get a big degree…Who wants to know how much atmospheric pressure is on five milligrams of mercury and stuff like that? That's not going to help me. I don't see why I have to go through all the bulls—t of high school to learn music."

Though his mother warned him that he wouldn't "last long" in the business, her son clearly went on to prove her wrong in a major way.
