Chicago Bears Playoff Odds: How Badly Did Losing to the Packers Hurt?

Chicago Bears playoff odds posts are much more fun to do after a winning week. But just because the Bears lost in Week 14 doesn’t mean their chances of making the postseason for the first time since 2018 are shot. This team still has a lot to play for, including a division title.

I am just about over losing to the Green Bay Packers. It has taken some time, sure. But the way I see it, losses like that one hurting is a good thing. Feeling letdown means that you had high expectations. The Bears haven’t given us much reason to give them reasonable expectations in recent years, let alone high ones. So, yeah, this one stings. But we’re onto the next one because the playoffs are still in sight for this team if it plays its cards right.

    Bears Playoff Odds (via ESPN)

Let’s check out the latest Bears Super Bowl odds from ESPN, whose Football Power Index provides updated odds for every team to make the playoffs, win its division, make the Super Bowl and win the whole freakin’ thing.

    Chicago Bears Playoff Odds (ESPN):

BEARS: 62.4% playoffs, 21.0% division, 3.5% make Super Bowl, 1.4% win Super Bowl Green Bay: 93.7% playoffs, 69.1% division, 17.2% make Super Bowl, 9.6% win Super Bowl Detroit: 54.3% playoffs, 9.9% division, 6.5% make Super Bowl, 3.6% win Super Bowl Minnesota: 0.0% playoffs, 0.0% division, 0.0% make Super Bowl, 0.0% win Super Bowl

It stings seeing the Bears playoff odds drop by 15.5 percentage points and their odds of winning the division fall by 15.2 percentage points just because they lost to the Packers. To fully drive home the pain, Green Bay saw its chances of winning the division jump by 12.1 percentage points. This is gross. As is the fact that the Week 14 combo of the Bears loss and Lions win helped Detroit boost its playoff odds by 11.4 percentage points. Thanks for nothing, Cowboys. I hope Jerry Jones and Matt Eberflus step on Legos when they get out of bed on Christmas morning.

In case you’re curious, Chicago’s Super Bowl odds are still in play. ESPN’s FPI has them with a 3.5 percent chance at making the big game and a 1.4 percent probability of winning it all.

    More Bears Playoff Odds:

Let the record show that ESPN isn’t the only show in town. Other sites have looks at Bears playoff odds numbers. Unfortunately, the trend of that lost costing the Bears continues as we look elsewhre. For instance, FTN (which uses DVOA ratings to help cook up its postseason percentages) saw the Bears playoff odds take a tumble after losing to Green Bay. Here is a rundown:

54.9%: Bears playoff odds (down from 69.7% last week) 17.0%: Bears chances of winning the division (down from 30.7% last week) 1.8%: Bears chances of making the playoffs as the No. 1 seed (down from 8.1% last week)

Even Chicago’s chances of making the postseason via the wild card took a tumble. Last week, FTN’s numbers had the Bears with a 39 percent chance of entering the tournament via a wild card spot. But one week later, those odds sit at 37.9 percent. For what it’s worth, FTN seems to like the Lions more this week, giving Detroit a 60.4 percent chance of making the playoffs — with a 50.5 percent probability of doing so as a wild card team. The Week 14 results really threw this thing for a loop. This stinks. No wonder Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is essentially calling the team’s Week 15 game against the Browns a must-win.

Chicago Bears Playoff Odds (The Athletic):

The Athletic has also a playoff simulator that shows the Bears with a 70 percent chance to make the playoffs. Here is the breakdown:

Make the playoffs: 70 percent (down 7 percentage points) No. 1 seed: 4 percent (down 6 percentage points) Wild card: 44 percent (up 3 percentae points) Host a wild-card game: 22 percent (down 4 percentage points) Out of the playoffs: 30 percent (up 7 percenage points)

How important is Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns to the Bears playoff odds?

A win would boost the Bears playoff odds to 77 percent, which is where it was at when we did this post last week. If they lose, it would drop the team’s odds of making it into the postseason to 53 percent.

Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson told reporters that Sunday’s game against the Browns is one the team “desperately” needs to win. And I do not think he is being overdramatic with his words. Not only did Chicago’s football team let a golden opportunity slip away against Green Bay, the loss at Lambeau Field also allowed the Detroit Lions to creep back into the postseason picture.

Regardless of what any other team does this week, a second consecutive loss would turn the Bears playoff odds into a virtual coin-flip with three games left to play. Going into the year, I would have gladly accepted that fate. But I want more for this team than to be in a coin-flip down the stretch. Don’t get me wrong. I am doing my best to enjoy this season for what it has been. However, when the head coach makes it clear that he is trying to drive this team into the playoffs, then it is time to adjust expecations accordingly for the stretch run.

This is a gotta-have-it game for the Bears playoff odds. I hope the players and coaches are as ready for it as fans are — because we will be in for a doozy of a finish if everyone is all-in on this season-ending playoff push.
