As the leader of the Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde wrote, sung and recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1980s. More than four decades later, Hynde, 74, is still at it and is offering fans an alternative to all the usual Christmas songs that flood the airwaves this time of year.
She took to her social media accounts this week to offer fans an overlooked holiday gem by the Pretenders in a post with what looks like a typed letter pasted on top of the cover art for the project.

“Hi Everyone! I imagine by now you’re getting pretty tired of hearing Christmas songs in shops. They seem to be reminders of things we’d rather forget for the most part, and they just keep on coming,” she wrote.
“Well, here’s a Christmas song that you may have never heard and you won’t hear it on the radio. We recorded it some years ago with the Duke Quartet on strings, Adam Seymour on guitar, produced by Stephen Street, and written and sung by Yours Truly. I can’t remember what year it was. Enjoy! XCH.”
View this post on InstagramThe song in question is called “Happy Christmas.” It has a 1995 copyright but apparently wasn’t widely released until the year 2020 on an EP titled after and featuring the Pretenders’ hit Christmas song “2000 Miles.” It was co-written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the songwriting team responsible for such ‘80s classics as Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.”
According to the credits on YouTube, Hynde’s memory may be incorrect. Ian Stanley, known for his work with Tears for Fears, is listed as the producer, not Stephen Street, best known for his work with the Smiths and the Cranberries.
No matter who produced the track, fans shared their love for the song in the comments on Instagram and YouTube.
“A masterpiece, through and through. In a world of musical repetition, this song's unique perspective is a refreshing twist. Thank you ? ❤️,” one fan posted on Instagram.
“Very Chrissie and very Christmas - never heard this before just now. Sounds lovely,” another fan posted on YouTube.
“Brings a tear to the eyes, another lonely Christmas but this song is sweet ?,” added another.
Back in October, Hynde released Duets Special, which features her teaming up with various artists, including k.d. lang, the late Mark Lanegan, Brandon Flowers of the Killers and others on versions of classics like “Me & Mrs. Jones,” “Can’t’ Help Falling in Love,” “I’m Not in Love” and more. The album made Classic Rock magazine albums of the year list.
