I wrote on Tuesday morning that Monday at the Winter Meetings this week was the slowest Monday I can recall since I started covering this annual event more than a decade and a half ago. Almost as soon as I did, Kyle Schwarber signed with the Phillies and Edwin Diaz signed with the Dodgers seemingly within seconds of each other (in reality, those deals merely got reported within seconds of each other, probably not coincidentally while Scott Boras, who is not either of their agent, was speaking to the media).
Finally, things were going to open up. Surely two very major signings, worth a whole lot of money, would trigger some movement. Everyone was braced for it.
And then … nothing happened. A couple more drip-drip rumors here and there. A Kyle Finnegan signing there. But mostly a whole lot of nothing.
Which might be today’s story, too. With the Rule 5 Draft coming at 1pm CT, a lot of executives and agents will be taking off from Orlando later today. That doesn’t mean talks stop, of course. Deals will still be done eventually. It’s just that the ease with which things can come together at the Winter Meetings will be in the rearview.
Behind the scenes, things are apparently not all the buzzier:
Brian Cashman described the market as moving at “glacial speed.”“We have a strong team. The job is to make it better and make it stronger. (Saying) it and doing it are two different things. We’re trying to pull that off, and it takes time. There's a lot of time on the board…
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) December 10, 2025Brian Cashman’s take on his progress at the Winter Meetings: “We’re just staying engaged, trying to match up with some things. But it's been tough so far. Don't like the asks coming our way, and I guess the opposing teams don’t like what I'm trying to pull from them on the trade…

Things can turn quickly, of course, and then a series of moves can tip over a bunch of other moves, particularly within certain pockets of the market. I’m not ruling out a busy final day here at the Winter Meetings. I’m just saying that it was disappointing to see virtually nothing happen in the 24 hours following the only two major moves so far this week.
