I love when we’re right on the border of a winter storm, where you know precipitation is coming one way or another, but you don’t yet know if it’s going to be snow or rain … and then it winds up being only rain. Love it.
The Rule 5 Draft is today (you know, the one where teams get to poach from each other’s orgs, selecting players who have been in the minors for a while without every reaching the 40-man roster), with the Chicago Cubs at least as likely to select someone as to lose someone. The have some upper-level depth arm types that sometimes another org projects really well and, if they’re rebuilding anyway, wants to save some money by putting a cheap arm in their bullpen or the back of their rotation. You never quite rule it out. On the selection side, however, I’ve gotta believe the Cubs are going to be looking very closely, if for no other reason than they have NINE open spots on the 40-man roster right now. Thrown in so much need in the bullpen, and you could easily imagine them trying to snag some high-risk, high-upside flier. A pick for the bench, like last year with Gage Workman, is not out of the question, either. The Rule 5 Draft is at 1pm CT today, and the Cubs pick 25th. Don’t forget, though, that unlike the normal draft, lots of teams will pass on making a selection, and also you can effectively trade picks in this one. Sometimes a club will find a partner with a higher pick that isn’t going to select anyone for themselves, and you offer them a little extra cash if they’ll take Player X for you. So the fact that the Cubs don’t pick until slot 25 doesn’t mean they can’t get a preferred target if they have one. Pretty clear relationship in the following to the Orioles-Edward Cabrera report:The Nationals and Orioles have had steady communication about MacKenzie Gore, sources said tonight. There is no indication yet that a deal is close. The Orioles have not completed a trade with the Nationals since the franchise moved to D.C.@MLBNetwork
MacKenzie Gore, Edward Cabrera to the Cubs?@SahadevSharma expects Chicago to be involved in trade talks for a starting pitcher. pic.twitter.com/oKsyzMa8tk
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) December 9, 2025Two very specific names chosen there by Sahadev Sharma. The Cubs, as we know, are also reportedly hot on some free agent starting pitchers, but clearly there are lots of irons in the fire.
This is a true statement, but also a very curious thing to tweet this morning apropos of nothing:Matt Shaw's defense at third base last season was better than what the Cubs expected — he finished at +12 in Defensive Runs Saved, and at a -1 for Outs Above Average, in his first full year at the position.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) December 10, 2025 Hmm. Interesting. The guy who has been talking up the trade rumors also mentions, out of nowhere, how great Matt Shaw has been at third base. Shaw, whose spot at third might be temporarily filled by a different third baseman signed in free agency. Shaw, who was reportedly among the tops asks by the Nationals at the Trade Deadline. A stray thought on the pitching side: given the Mets missing on both Edwin Diaz and Kyle Schwarber yesterday, and given the semi-loud Michael King talk that popped up around the same time, is this a situation where the Mets simply are not going to let themselves lose out on King? The other offers on Kyle Schwarber reportedly included the Reds at 5/$125M (but maybe some room to go up) and Pirates at 4/$120M. Dodgers just gonna keep going, and whatever:The Dodgers downplayed their need for relief help, then promptly signed the best closer available. They know the next CBA likely will include increased financial restrictions. So why not go all in?With @Ken_Rosenthal: t.co/diYo4Dy6xV

— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) December 10, 2025 Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie will be trying to earn a lot of playing time this year with the big league Cubs, but first he’ll be playing for his home country:Owen Caissie is reportedly headed to the 2026 World Baseball Classic to represent Team Canada ?? pic.twitter.com/zzgUNnJ3BH
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) December 9, 2025 Caissie had the privilege of playing for Team Canada last time around, too, and you may remember the delightful clip of him hitting a dinger while Pete Crow-Armstrong and James Triantos celebrate:It's called the home run hustle.
