This is starting to look like a lost year for Kyler Gordon.
The 25-year-old cornerback has been limited to three games this season because of a variety of injuries. Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers should have marked his fourth appearance of the season. It was set to be his second game back after returning from a stint on injured reserve. Unfortunately, for the Bears, it wasn’t meant to be. Gordon suffered a groin injury during pre-game warmups and did not play. Chicago’s defense felt the loss of Kyler Gordon throughout the game, particularly in moments when Packers receiver Christian Watson was streaking down the field.
But if you were hopeful that Kyler Gordon’s absence due to this latest injury would be short-lived, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Ben Johnson offers a Kyler Gordon update
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’ reponse (via the Tribune) to a question about Gordon’s situation was eye-opening. From Sean Hammond’s latest:
Asked if his patience is wearing thin with regard to Gordon’s injuries, Johnson said, “It’s disappointing.”
“I wish I had a better feel for the individual, but with him being out as much as he has, I haven’t really gotten to see him on the field and competing and get to know him like I’d like to at this point yet,” Johnson said. “I do know that the biggest predictor of a soft-tissue injury is having a previous one, and he’s kind of in this rut right now that we’re not able to get out of.
“So we’re going to exhaust all of our resources in and outside of the building to make sure we’re addressing it and doing what we can to get him back and healthy again.”
Sheesh. I would not bet on Kyler Gordon being someone you can count on down the stretch.

Back in April, Johnson said this about the Gordon extension: “We are fired up to secure Kyler as a mainstay on our defense and a dependable component of our team. Our staff cannot wait to get to work with Kyler.” Oof! That hasn’t aged well.
And let’s not forget about what Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen said about Kyler Gordon when he arrived this offseason:
“Some of the things that I see him do and the way that he fits in the run game tells me that he could be a fit with safety also. We’ve had guys that have had the flexibility to play a lot of different positions.
“I think that’s important in today’s football where you’re not just locked into one thing. Being able to be multiple and do a lot of different things. That’s something that I think he can do. As we get to know him better, spend more time with him, start to get out on the field with him a little bit more, we’ll have a better feel for where that second position might be, and where we want to try to work him.”

Kyler Gordon’s injury issues this season have thrown a wrench in this coaching staff’s deensive plans. And while I don’t think this is a top-10 group with a healthy version of Kyler, you don’t need to squint to see how much his presence is missed on that side of the ball. It’s not just that Kyler Gordon is hurt and missing games. That only tells part of the story. The Bears were counting on Gordon being available and an impact defender. I understand that Gordon has had injury issues in the past, but Filling the gaps for a player who misses 3-4 games is much easier than doing so for 9-10 games.
When the Bears extended Kyler Gordon, I was elated. It was encouraging to see a young player who was drafted and developed earn a second contract. And when the deal became official, I thought it was a sign that the Bears (1) had faith in his medicals holding up moving forward and (2) would have good enough contingency plans in place to prepare for his injury-related absence. But we are just months removed from the extension becoming officially official and the early returns aren’t looking good. Because while C.J. Gardner-Johnson as a fallback option has been fine, missing Gordon still stings.
