DIII Albertus Magnus College Pauses Swimming and Diving Programs Indefinitely

By Terin Frodyma on SwimSwam

Division III program Albertus Magnus in New Haven, Connecticut, has announced that it will pause its swimming and diving programs indefinitely, citing low participation numbers and noting that it is “increasingly difficult” to offer a competitive environment and student-athlete experience.

According to a press release from the university, the decision came after a “thorough review of the programs”. Michael Kobylanski, the Director of Athletics at Albertus Magnus, explained that the decision, while not an easy one, “is the most responsible path at this time.”

“After careful review and thoughtful consideration, the College determined that sustained low roster numbers since each program’s inception have made it increasingly difficult to provide the competitive environment and overall student-athlete experience that aligns with our expectations and values. ” Kobylanski said in the press release. “While this was not an easy decision, we believe it is the most responsible path at this time. We remain grateful to the student-athletes, coaches, and supporters who helped establish these programs, and should future interest and enrollment demand support renewed viability, the College would welcome the opportunity to revisit swimming and diving in the years ahead.”

Albertus Magnus introduced the women’s program in 2019, with the men’s team being introduced four years later in 2023.

This past season, the women’s program finished 7th with 91 points at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, while the men finished 5th with 9 points.

Kobylanski also mentioned that the addition of those programs reflected the university’s “commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes.”

The addition of swimming and diving, beginning with women’s competition in 2019 and expanding to include men’s competition in 2023, reflected Albertus Magnus College’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes and strengthening participation across our athletics programs,” Kobylanski said in the press release. “Over the last several years, our swimming and diving student-athletes have represented Albertus with integrity, demonstrated strong academic achievement, and contributed positively to our campus community.”
