Lala (Mariel Molino) is once again the focus of a finale. This time, it's the NCIS: Origins’ Season 2 midseason finale, when the NIS agent’s favorite CI is shot and the team joins forces with Oceanside PD to track down the culprit. For others, it’s just another case, but for Lala, it’s personal.
The “End of the Road” midseason finale demonstrates that Lala is so successful with her CIs. She gets emotionally involved with them, and Twitchy Tony (Travis Hammer), the CI who is shot, is her favorite.
“Lala really lets these people in emotionally,” co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal tells Parade. “She gets to know them on a human level, and that's what lets her connect with them, and that's what helps them to trust her in return. But there is a cost to that. Anytime you let somebody in emotionally, you're putting yourself at risk to getting hurt.”

But to Lala, it’s worth the cost, and it’s something that she’s been trying to teach Gibbs (Austin Stowell). He’s so shut down since the death of his wife and daughter that it’s really tough for him to let anybody in, including Lala. That emotional wall is another issue that’s confronted in this episode when Gibbs’ relationship with Diane Sterling (Kathleen Kenny) is tested when she gets a job in Los Angeles, and she asks him to move to the NIS L.A. office to be with her.

“His feelings for Diane are strong, and there's a real connection there,” co-showrunner David J. North says. “Of course, anytime that person is saying that they're going to be moving, it crosses his mind, but that's just not an option for Gibbs because of the life he’s built here with the team, which has really become a surrogate family for him.”
Monreal adds, “It's not an option for her either. This is a huge opportunity for her career-wise, this is something that she doesn't want to pass up, and neither one of them likes the idea of long distance, so they both have obstacles in the relationship in this episode.”
The concept for “End of the Road” was developed by Monreal and North. They wanted to follow the Season 1 midseason finale, “Blue Bayou,” which showed flashbacks of Gibbs preparing for Christmas without his family and how his relationship with his landlady Ruth (London Garcia) helped him to overcome the trauma and become more stable, with something equally emotional.
“We wanted to do something as meaningful as that and really have another character that was a special episode,” North says. “So, Gina came up with this criminal informant idea and this character Twitchy Tony, who I just fell in love with. I thought it was the most beautifully written script, and the execution by the actor and Mariel is just phenomenal.”
Plus, the episode allowed them to revisit Lala’s life after her accident when she was home recovering from her devastating injuries, and how Tony helped her to realize what she needed to focus on, even as Gibbs never showed up at her apartment to check on her.

“I really wanted to give people a window into that time that we skipped over for Lala, where she is in recovery and we see the struggle it was for her to get back to work and all the things that had to line up in order for her to make that happen,” Monreal says. “It was something that we skipped over in the beginning in order to get to the place where we needed to get to in the premiere for her to come back, but to me, it was a really important time in the life of this character, so I didn't want to miss out on it.”

Also, in the Season 2 midseason finale, Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) visits his brother Mason (Philip Winchester) at the compound where Mason is staying and demonstrates how the two brothers are still struggling to come to terms with their new relationship.
“That [tension] is part of who they are as people, it's built into their relationship the way that they interact with each other,” Monreal says. “That part of it doesn't go away, but also the love underneath it doesn't go away, as we've seen they've reconciled, but it's not easy. They don't always see eye to eye. They're two big personalities, so that makes for some pretty interesting conversations.”
And, of course, they will be leaving us with a cliffhanger or two.
“We never shy away from writing ourselves out of corners,” Monreal says. “That's kind of when we come up with our best stuff.”
And North adds, “We just kind of go for it and figure it out.”
