MagSafe-Compatible, Scratch-Resistant slip-on cover.
buy from amazonI enjoy reading and learning about new iPhone features and case designs as the new devices are announced and launched each September. I have several go-to case brands that regularly deliver on form, function, and fashion. Even though I go back and forth on screen protectors, with the high cost of iPhones, I cannot imagine carrying an unadorned phone. Numerous designs offer simple protection, rugged outdoor protection, enhanced waterproofing, drop ratings, color schemes, nostalgic themes, and accessory features such as kickstands, wallets, and MagSafe integration. It can be rather challenging to pick and choose among these features. OtterBox has been around for a long time and regularly offers reliable, protective, and attractive cases for your phone.
The Commuter Series case for iPhone 17 Pro Max Arrived in a typical OtterBox hanging-type display. The OtterBox logo and Commuter name were displayed at the top, while several product features were displayed along the bottom edge (3X Military-standard drop rating, thin, pocket-sized design, protective port covers, and MagSafe compatibility). The packaging’s primary focus was the large, open window, which allowed the user to evaluate the purple color, the semi-textured back panel, rubbery side grips, and the raised camera protective barrier.
The box’s rear panel displayed three multilingual product features: a hassle-free limited warranty, raised camera/screen edge protection, and a rugged design that “fights off scratches.” Unlike my recent review of the Defender Pro XT for iPhone Air, neither the Sole series case for iPhone Air (review coming soon), nor the Commuter Series case for iPhone 17 Pro Max offered a free holster. Most of the remaining packaging surface was dedicated to product name, contact information, manufacturing labels, and text. I liked the clean white shell, multilingual product description on the back panel, and the ability to interact with the case within the front window.
I removed the inner tray from the outer packaging and slid the 1.8-ounce by 3 1/4- inch-wide by 6 5/8-inch-tall by 1/2-inch-thick case from the tray. Next, I removed the cardboard manual/spacer from within the phone case. The case was designed as a two-part shell. The 0.9-ounce outer hard-plastic frame encompassed the 0.8-ounce rubberized inner cover. The left side panel of the inner case had a 1/4-inch-long by 1/8-inch-tall action button and dual 1/2-inch-long by 1/8-inch-tall volume buttons. The right side panel had a 3/4-inch-long by 1/8-inch-tall power button and a large 7/8-inch-long by 5/16-inch-tall camera button cutout. The bottom panel had dual 9/16-inch-long by 1/8-inch-tall speaker cutouts, a centralized 5/8-inch-long by 3/8-inch-tall USB-C cutout, and a rubberized port flap. The back panel had a 3 15/16-inch-wide by 2 7/8-inch-tall camera cutout and a small 5/8-inch-diameter circular hole along the back to connect to the outer shell.
I pressed my iPhone 17 Pro Max into the silicone case (9.5-ounce total) and noted a nice, snug fit with the phone’s body. The case’s raised action, volume, and power buttons fit perfectly against the phone’s buttons and provided a reactive experience. The lower speaker ports and USB-C port aligned well with the phone. The inner case did not protect the camera or the camera action button, but it did provide a pleasing, grippy feel along the sides of the phone. The front panel provided ~1/16 inch raised surface for screen protection with an OtterBox screen protector installed, and just at 1/8-inch raised without a protector.
I pressed the inner case and phone into the outer shell (10.6-ounce) and reviewed the extra features. The outer case included a MagSafe ring, a 1/8-inch raised camera protector, grips along the lower, top, and bottom panels, and a protective layer for the touch-sensitive camera button. The inner case’s rear panel had two raised trapezoidal attachment points that connected to cutouts on the outer panel. I liked the inner dark purple and outer lighter purple against the blue iPhone 17 Pro Max. The USB-C port was easy to access, while also remaining protected from dust/debris with the cover. The case had nice, molded, rounded corners, grippy side panels, and the blend/merge borders of the outer/inner cases matched quite well. The lower edge of the rear panel provided an etched OTTERBOX logo. I preferred the two-part design of the Commuter case to the Defender Pro XT case for the iPhone Air. The phone was completely surrounded by a silicone border, providing extra protection for the top, bottom, sides, and camera. The outer case did not give any additional screen protection.
The camera was protected solely by the outer hardshell. I liked the 1/8-inch raised border and the ability to visualize the iPhone’s bold blue color. However, I did not like that the design left an open, central gap throughout the raised camera segment. The raised camera borders successfully lifted and defended the camera when I placed my iPhone 17 Pro Max onto the table. The design will provide little to no protection for the raised cameras within my Nite-Ize XXL holster, or if dropped onto an uneven surface. For this reason, I much prefer an ESR case and the extra layer of plastic around the camera, lidar, microphone, and flash. By reducing the open area and extending the raised surface to the level of the camera, the risk of damaging one of the most expensive features of an iPhone is reduced. I loved the outer shell, two-part design, but was not a fan of the camera protection.
I much preferred the extra layer of plastic within the camera segment that a few other cases brands provided (ESR, Diaclara, TOCOL, CANSHN). I had a similar opinion on the OtterBox Defender Pro XT and with my upcoming review of the OtterBox Sole series case for the iPhone Air. I enjoyed the thin design, the reactive buttons, and the dual-panel layout. Thus far, the ESR Hybrid Magnetic Case for iPhone 17 Pro Max has been my main point of comparison for 17 Pro Max cases. The OtterBox Commuter case did not offer as much protection for the camera and did not include a kickstand. Both cases provided functional MagSafe integration, but the single-wall design of the ESR case seemed to be just a little more reliable and quicker to connect to my wireless charger. Both cases attached well to MagSafe mounts thanks to the strong magnetic attachment. Even though I liked the green color of the ESR case, the OtterBox visual and tactile design felt more premium. Lastly, there is a rather large price difference between the two cases ESR ($24.99) vs Otterbox ($44.99).
OtterBox makes amazing, beautiful, and functional cases. My reviews and comparisons are designed to provide a personal, real daily-use, instruction. The case was easy to install, provided visually appealing colors, protected the camera button, screen, side, back, and screen of my iPhone, and had nice grippy side panels. My only main reservation is with the design of the camera region. I read several other reviews on OtterBox and Amazon, and some complained about the camera action button getting stuck and the slick surface of the outer hard plastic. I did not have any issues with the camera button (layout or function), side buttons, USB-C access, or the speakers. I did not have any damage/issues with my phone over the last 2 weeks of use, but I still have reservations about my camera. If the purple mystery color does not suit your fancy, you can enjoy a black, grey-comfort, sagebrush, or blue-sentiment case.
