Raul Malo, the lead vocalist and cofounder of The Mavericks, has died at the age of 60. His family and the band confirmed his death, which followed a public cancer battle that he first spoke about in 2024.
“It’s with the deepest grief we share the passing of our friend, bandmate and brother Raul Malo,” the band said in a statement via Instagram on Tuesday, December 9. “Anyone with the pleasure of being in Raul’s orbit knew that he was a force of human nature, with an infectious energy. Over a career of more than three decades entertaining millions around the globe, his towering creative contributions and unrivaled, generational talent created the kind of multicultural American music reaching far beyond America itself.”

Malo was born on August 7, 1965, in Miami, Florida. He helped form The Mavericks in 1989, and the group stood out for its mix of country, rock, Latin influences and classic pop sounds. His voice became the band’s defining element, helping them break through in the ‘90s with albums such as What a Crying Shame and singles including “There Goes My Heart.”
The Mavericks earned strong critical praise throughout their career and built a loyal fan base. Although the group disbanded in the early 2000s, Malo relaunched The Mavericks in 2012, and they continued recording and touring through the next decade. Outside the band, he also wrote, produced and collaborated with artists including Rick Treviño, contributing to Treviño’s 2003 hit “In My Dreams.”
View this post on InstagramMalo’s health struggles became public in June 2024 when he announced he had been diagnosed with cancer and was beginning treatment in Houston. In the months that followed, he shared updates about surgeries and hospitalizations. In 2025, he revealed that his cancer had progressed to leptomeningeal disease, a rare and serious complication involving the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

A tribute concert scheduled for December 5 and 6 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium went on without him after he was hospitalized, with friends and fellow musicians performing in his honor. The event showed just how widely respected he was across country, Americana and roots-music communities.
Malo leaves behind a three-decade career marked by a distinctive sound, a devoted fanbase and a catalog that crossed genre lines long before it was common to do so. He is survived by his wife, his children and his bandmates.
