Over the weekend, iconic band KISS was honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for their influence on American pop culture, especially in music and rock and roll.
First presented in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors is an annual award given to individuals or groups for their lifetime contributions to American culture and the arts, including music, dance, theater, opera, film and television. Honorees were announced in August.
Formed in New York City in 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, KISS quickly set themselves apart with their live shows that are filled with pyrotechnics and elaborate costumes and makeup. Throughout their 50-year career, the band has released more than two dozen albums, generating hits like "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Detroit Rock City," as well as selling over 100 million records worldwide. One of the most influential rock groups of all time, KISS helped shape the blueprint for modern live entertainment, leaving a lasting impact on artists and fans.
KISS stopped making new music and performing together live in 2023, but shortly afterwards announced that they would perform as digital avatars for fully virtual stage show performances, starting in Las Vegas in 2027.
The surviving members — Stanley, Simmons and Criss — attended the ceremony on Sunday night in Washington, D.C. to accept their honor, wearing nice tuxedos instead of spandex. Others recognized this year include George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford and Gloria Gaynor.

A day after the ceremony, KISS put out an official statement to X on Monday, saying that they were "deeply honored" for the recognition, and honored late member Ace Frehley in their caption.
"From the very beginning, KISS has been about proving that anything is possible with hard work and passion. We’re deeply honored to receive the Kennedy Center Honors, and proudly share this recognition with our fans and all those who have been a part of creating this legacy," they shared. "This honor would not be possible without the irreplaceable contributions of our founding partner, Ace Frehley. knowing how much this award meant to him, we celebrate this milestone as we mourn his loss."
