Ozzy Trapilo Quietly Had Another Good Game

Admittedly, it is tough to find silver linings after losing to the Packers — again.

But these Ozzy Trapilo numbers from Pro Football Focus (via Twitter user ImBearingDown) opened my eyes and put a smile on my face:

This was Ozzy Trapilo’s third consecutive start at left tackle. In two of those starts, Pro Football Focus has handed the rookie offensive lineman a grade of 70 or better. — and that includes a game in which he was the team’s highest-graded offensive player. Not too shabby for a player who appeared to be destined to play right tackle after struggling to find his footing on the left side during training camp and the preseason. Trapilo is the third different starter the Bears have sent out to protect quarterback Caleb Williams’ blindside this season. But he might be the one with the most staying power.

How would you grade Bears rookie Ozzy Trapilo?

It is a small sample of just 224 snaps, but Ozzy Trapilo has finally seen enough playing time to qualify for the Pro Football Focus leaderboard. PFF has Trapilo with a 66.2 overall grade (43rd of 81 offensive tackles), a 67.8 run-blocking grade (36th/81 OTs), and a 57.4 pass blocking grade (62nd/81). For what it’s worth, Trapilo’s pass-blocking grade is the only one that gives me pause because it stands as the lone sub-par area in his game right now. And yet, in his most recent game, Trapilo posted a 91.1 pass-blocking grade. Perhaps that is a sign of development for the rookie.

BEARS 24-HOUR RULE: Ben Johnson Has Me Believing

I like that the Bears have given Ozzy Trapilo an extended run at left tackle. It wasn’t a sure-thing that the team would let Trapilo stick in the starting lineup because Theo Benedet (who Trapilo replaced as a starter due to injury) had played admirably since taking over for Week 1 starter Braxton Jones. But between Trapilo’s size, length, strength, and potential, the powers that be at Halas Hall have plenty of reasons to give the Boston College product a long leash.

NFC NORTH ROUNDUP — WEEK 14 EDITION

At this point of the season, I am all-in on riding it out with Ozzy Trapilo as the Bears’ starting left tackle. We have seen Trapilo’s draft classmates, running back Kyle Monangai and receiver Luther Burden III, improve as the season has gone along and their playing time has incresed. We could very well see Trapilo follow that path. If he can, then Chicago’s front office could plug an offseaosn hole well before the start of the new league year next March. That would be a net win in my book.

Other PFF pass-blocking grades for notable Bears offensive linemen (via Twitter user ilannfl):

79.8: Drew Dalman, center 76.3: Joe Thuney, left guard 56.9: Jonah Jackson, right guard 50.7: Darnell Wright, right tackle

It was a rough time for the right side of the Bears offensive line. That was my assessment during the game and after it, so I feel better knowing that my eyes and PFF’s grades are matching up. But with that being said, it stings to see that Darnell Wright and Jonah Jackson both had sub-60 grades from Pro Football Focus. And it was especially discouraging to see that Wright (4 pressures) and Jackson (1) cobined to give up five pressures. That just can’t happen in a game of that magnitude. Thankfully, that isn’t something we have seen often from that tandem. It just stinks that it happened on Sunday against the Packers.
