We often drift into tearing down personalities, says Ravichandran Ashwin after Gautam Gambhir slams Delhi Capitals Owner Parth Jindal

As cricketers continue to face heavy trolling and criticism on social media for the smallest of mistakes on the field, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has delivered a strong message.

In recent times, several Indian cricketers such as Harshit Rana or Prasidh Krishna have been targeted by the fans. Even head coach Gautam Gambhir has faced heavy backlash not only on social media but on the field as well. Recently, a clip of few fans heckling Gambhir on the field went viral on internet.

While social media has bridged the gap between the cricketers and fans, it is fast becoming a big headache for the players and the support staff members. Every small mistake is being scrutinized by the fans and it usually leads to heavy trolling.

Recently, Gambhir indirectly hit out at Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal after the latter suggested split coaching. Following India's 2-0 loss in the Test series against South Africa, Jindal took to X (formerly Twitter) to suggest that India should appoint a red-ball specialist as their Test coach.

The comments did not go down well with Gambhir as he hit back: "There were a few things said by people, who didn’t have any connection to cricket. One IPL owner also wrote about split coaching. This is very surprising. It’s important for people to stay in their domain. We don’t go into their domain. So, they have no right to interfere in what we do."

Ravichandran Ashwin urges fans to have healthier online conversation:

Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his views on the heavy trolling faced by cricketers on social media. Talking to RevSportz, the India great highlighted that the fans usually tend to tear down personalities.

Ashwin used Riyan Parag's place in the ODI team as an example as he explained: "The discussion shouldn't be about whether Parag is good or bad.

"It should be about what supports his selection and what doesn't. Instead, we often drift into tearing down personalities. That's the part that worries me. A fan of one player doesn't need to dislike another.

"If what we say reaches ten people and affects five, वे should aim to ensure it helps more of them. That’s the responsibility we all share," he added.
