The men’s 50m backstroke final tonight in Lublin, Poland, was a fierce battle all the way to the wall, with the top 3 finishers separated by just .08.

Leading the pack was 31-year-old Ralf Tribuntsov of Estonia, giving his nation gold with a stunning effort of 22.68.

That fell just .05 shy of the 22.63 national record the veteran put on the books during the semi-finals yesterday.

Czech Republic ace Miroslav Knedla settled for silver this evening, just .01 behind in 22.69, hitting a new national benchmark in the process.

Knedla formerly held the national record with the 22.74 notched last night, so the 20-year-old Indiana Hoosier managed to shave .05 off that result to post his fastest-ever.

Italy’s Francesco Lazzari finished in a time of 22.76 to grab the bronze ahead of teammate Lorenzo Mora, who placed 4th in 22.83.

Further down the line, Ollie Morgan of Great Britain and Robert Pedersen of Denmark each nabbed national records of their own.

Morgan held the former GBR standard with the 23.07 produced during the semi-finals, so the 22-year-old relay medley silver medalist from 2 years ago dipped under the 23-second barrier for the first time in his young career, placing 5th.

Morgan already broke the British national record in the 100m back with his mighty 49.55 in the heats.

As for Pedersen, his result of 22.94 also represented his first-ever foray under the 23-second threshold. His 6th place finish dropped .07 off his previous national record of 23.01 from last night’s semi-final contest.
