FORT COLLINS — Josh Pascarelli’s runner in the lane with 33 seconds left gave the Colorado State men’s basketball team an 88-85 lead, and the Rams hung on to defeat Colorado for the second time in three years at Moby Arena, 91-86, on Saturday.
Pascarelli’s final basket gave him a game-high 26 points, which included eight 3-pointers, as the Rams avenged last season’s loss to the Buffs in Boulder and also handed CU its first loss of the season.
“This game is always awesome,” CSU head coach Ali Farokhmanesh said. “It’s a great game for the state. If you want to keep growing the game of basketball in the state of Colorado, Colorado and Colorado State need to play. You can’t really get a whole lot better than, from an offensive standpoint, 91-86. But that’s what makes this rivalry fun.”
After Kyle Jorgensen converted a three-point play to give CSU an 86-85 lead, Pascarelli’s shot extended it to the point the Buffs couldn’t catch up.
CU made one last trip to the free throw line and got within 88-86, but the Rams went 3-for-4 from the stripe after that to secure the victory in front of a sold-out crowd at Moby.
In addition to Pascarelli’s 26 points, Jorgensen added 21, Jevin Muniz had 12, Brandon Rechsteiner 11 and Jase Butler 10. Jorgensen led the team with seven rebounds.
“That was the best atmosphere I’ve ever been in, personally, coming from my last school,” Pascarelli said. “We could only hold like 3,000. Here it’s like triple that. And the court storm right after, that just really shows this is college basketball.”
CSU opened the second half with a 48-41 lead and stretched it to 59-47 after Pascarelli’s sixth 3-pointer of the game with just under four minutes gone by. The Rams then took their largest lead of the game at 62-49 with 14:42 left in the game.
That’s when the Buffs made their run. They outscored CSU 16-0 over a stretch of almost five minutes to go ahead 65-62 with 9:49 remaining. A free throw by Jorgensen finally ended the Buffs’ run.
CSU got within a point at 67-66 after another 3-pointer by Pascarelli and tied the game at 74 on a 3-pointer by Butler with 6:39 remaining.
The Rams finally wrestled the lead back on a free throw by Muniz that put CSU ahead 75-74 with 5:19 left, and a 3-pointer by Jorgensen pushed the Rams’ advantage to 78-74 with 4:39 remaining.
CU answered the Rams’ brief 7-0 run with four straight points to tie the game at 78 and the teams began to trade baskets until a three-point play by Jorgensen gave CSU an 86-85 lead with 1:17 on the clock.
Then Pascarelli extended the lead and the Rams held on to improve to 7-2 on the season.
“At first, I was trying to get to a three, I’m not going to like,” Pascarelli said of his last field goal. “But he bit and I was like, ‘All right, keep going. Play basketball.’ It was a good look, so I just took it.”
The game was tight early with two ties and three lead changes in the first five minutes.
With 13:19 left in the first half, a 3-pointer by Butler gave CSU a 16-13 lead and the Rams never trailed again in the opening 20 minutes.
CU never got closer than two points before halftime and the Rams took their largest lead of the first half when Butler made a pair of free throws to give CSU a 36-24 advantage with 6:31 left before the break.
The Rams took a 48-41 lead into halftime after making 10 3-pointers in the first half. CSU shot 53.1% from the field in the first half to CU’s 63%. The Buffs also outrebounded the Rams 16-11 in the first 20 minutes.
Pascarelli led the Rams with 15 points in the first half, all on five 3-pointers.
CSU will be back in action Tuesday when the Rams host Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at Moby Arena.
