In her Instagram post, she stated “This wasn’t an easy decision, but due ot illness I will be withdrawing from the remainder of this European Championships…sometimes taking a step back is the strongest move forward.”

Vanotterdijk withdrew from the 200 IM semifinal this evening at the last minute, after she qualified 13th in the prelims. She also swam the 200 breaststroke final tonight, finishing 8th overall in 2:21.05, three seconds off her Belgian record time of 2:18.07.

She has not had an easy schedule so far this week, as she came into the meet entered in the 50 free, 200 free, 50 back, 100 back, 200 breast, 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM and 200 IM. She scratched the 200 freestyle on day two of the meet and the 100 back on day three, but she swam through the finals of the 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM, and 200 breaststrokes.

This has led to multiple events everyday, and she has won two silver medals in the 50 fly and 100 IM events.

She also broke her own Belgian record in the 50 fly three times over the course of the met, lowering it every time she hit the pool in Lublin.

Yesterday, she swam three individual events in the finals session. She finished 2nd in the 100 IM, setting the Belgian record in the 100 IM and moving to 6th all-time in the event. In the 200 breast, she qualified 4th, less than 30 minutes after she finished the 100 IM, and in the 100 fly, she finished 5th.

Over the next two days, she was scheduled to swim the 50 free and 50 backstroke events.

This news comes after Dutch World Record holder Caspar Corbeau reportedly got sick with an “upper respiratory issue” after last night’s semifinals.
