According to CBS News, the George Lucas-founded museum will open to the public on September 22, 2026, formally inviting guests to experience the $1 million museum almost a decade after its initial conception.
As CBS reported, construction for the museum originally began in March 2018 in Los Angeles' Exposition Park neighborhood. The 300,000-square-foot building utilizes an inventive retro-futuristic design by architect Mao Yansong, likening itself more to a space ship out of Star Warsthan a traditional museum building.
Rather than a straightforward exhibit dedicated to Lucas's expansive career in Hollywood, the main focus of the museum will be "narrative art," celebrating how art itself has shaped humanity since the dawn of time.
“Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life,” said Lucas, co-founder of the museum, in an official press release.
“This is a museum of the people’s art—the images are illustrations of beliefs we live with every day. For that reason, this art belongs to everyone,” added Lucas Museum co-founder Mellody Hobson. “Our hope is that as people move through the galleries, they will see themselves, and their humanity, reflected back.”
Though the museum will include a few important props from Lucas's career-making tenure in the Star Wars series, the Lucas Museum will also display a permanent collection of over 40,000 works.
This will include everything from fine art and classical paintings to 20th century comic art and children's book illustrations.
