While the final fall sports events will take place in the coming days — with football title games Saturday and state spirit competitions a week from now — the winter season is already underway.
And if statewide preseason polls serve as accurate prognosticators, numerous local teams should make some noise this winter.
Defending state champion Windsor is the top-ranked team in CHSAANow.com’s recently released Class 5A boys basketball coaches poll.
A season ago, the Wizards capped a 22-6 season with the school’s first boys basketball state title since 1924.
Severance is eighth in the 5A boys rankings.

The 2A boys poll is also full of local teams. Two-time defending champion Resurrection Christian is first, one spot ahead of Strasburg. Windsor Charter is third, and Highland is eighth.
Knocking on the door
Numerous local teams sit just one spot back of the No. 1 ranking in CHSAANow.com girls basketball polls.
Defending state champion University is the second-ranked team in 4A behind perennial powerhouse Holy Family. A season ago, the Bulldogs went 28-0 and won the first girls basketball state title in school history.

Roosevelt is ranked third in 4A, one spot behind the Wizards. Severance is fourth in 4A.
Eaton, which is seemingly always in contention in 3A, is the top-ranked team in the classification ahead of Alamosa and the defending 3A champion, Brush. Fort Lupton is fourth, and Valley is seventh in 3A.
Highland is ranked fifth in 2A.
Severance, along with Moffat County, is the third-ranked girls wrestling team in 4A.
