Alabama women’s basketball returned to Coleman Coliseum Thursday night, facing off against a sleepy Clemson team who seemed to not be able to communicate or move the ball efficiently. The Crimson Tide secured the game 72-48, continuing to remain undefeated this season.
Alabama started the game strong, ending the first quarter with a 15-9 lead after Clemson fell into multiple scoring droughts.
Alabama’s lead continued into the second quarter until Clemson seemingly woke from its trance and went on a 6-0 run, scoring two 3-pointers in one minute after missing multiple baskets.
This run secured Clemson the lead 20-19, going into a timeout, but Alabama came back onto the court looking for vengeance. Alabama went on a 10-0 run the remaining 4 minutes of the quarter, swinging the game back in its favor.
“If you’re a player that cares about the mistake that you made in a play, that’s a sign of selfishness,” guard Jessica Timmons said. “So, understanding that you make a mistake, you get back, bust your tail on defense, communicate, talk.”
Clemson started the third quarter with a good 3-pointer and a layup before Alabama snagged the ball back for a 16-0 run.
“They’re [Alabama] not blazing fast, but what they are is persistent,” Clemson’s head coach Shawn Poppie said. “They keep coming at you, multiple moves. You better stay down, stay disciplined, and hold your ground. We kind of built walls, and we weren’t disciplined.”
Clemson’s lack of discipline showed again in the turnover department. Alabama was able to score 18 points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Clemson was only able to force 6 turnovers and couldn’t capitalize on any of them.
Alabama was able to keep Clemson’s scoring down across the board, limiting the Tigers to .76 points per possession. Simultaneously, the Crimson Tide maintained 1.14 points per possession.
“Clemson does a really nice job with their gap and hump defense, and I thought we were able to counter with being a little stronger with the basketball,” Alabama head coach Kristy Curry said.
Alabama will return to Coleman Coliseum on Sunday, where the team will take on ULM. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network+.
