The Awesomeness of Unpredictability, Coach of the Year Odds, What’s Up With Caleb’s Accuracy? And Other Bears Bullets

I needed a vibe change, so I rearranged my entire bedroom. And while the good news is that I like what I did, the bad news is that I created a mess in the process that I have to clean up. Whoopsiedoodle. But first, Thursday’s BN Bears Bullets…

In discussing Ben Johnson’s Coach of the Year chances, Brad Biggs (Tribune) points out that the best coaches hardly ever win the thing. Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin, and Kyle Shanahan have never won the award. The Bears have had three NFL Coach of the Year winners since the turn of the century: Dick Jauron (2001), Lovie Smith (2005), and Matt Nagy (2018). Of that trio, only Lovie was able to secure a playoff win and any semblance of sustainability. I think Ben has done a marvelous job turning this thing around in Chicago. But if the award is cursed, then I’m OK with him not winning it this year. Ben Johnson (+240 odds via Biggs’ reporting) probably deserves the award for being the first Bears coach to understand clock management. I wonder if there is a correlation between playing Madden growing up (something Johnson recently revealed) and knowing when to use timeouts. The Chicago Bears are the largest reported Super Bowl bet liability at a legal United States sports book. Ben Fawkes (Yahoo!) reports a bettor at BetMGM wagered $50,000 on a Bears Super Bowl future when it was 66-to-1. If Chicago’s football team shuffles its way to a Super Bowl title, the wager would win the bettor $3.3 million. I could get all of my Christmas shopping done (and get something for myself along the way) with that kind of payday. From Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio:

The folks at Carnegie Mellon have engaged in a study that focuses on the unpredictability of the timing before the snap, specifically as it relates to pre-snap motion.

Ron Yurko, an assistant professor of statistics and data science, used advanced statistical modeling with more than two thousand NFL plays and player-tracking data. The study, performed with Ph.D. student Quang Nguyen and recently published in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A, found that quarterbacks who vary the timing between pre-snap motion and the snap face have greater overall success.

That was one of the more interesting things I’ve read this week, so I wanted to share it here in today’s set of BN Bears Bullets. Firstly, because it helped me further appreciate Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s scheme. But also because it gave me an added bit of respect for center Drew Dalman. The center position has been a sore spot for this team in recent years, but Dalman has brought stability and strength to the positon. What a welcome signing he has been for this team. Nicholas Moreano (Marquee) writes that the true indicator of the Bears passing offense moving in the right direction will be if quarterback Caleb Williams is consistently hitting open targets who have been schemed up by his head coach. We discussed Williams’ accuracy issues on Wednesday in a post that I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing. ESPN’s Ben Solak in response to a question if the Bears are good: “Yep. And so is Caleb.” (ESPN) There is still time to vote in this poll:

A question I discussed with a friend after dinner last night — do you like the 3:25 p.m. CT late afternoon window start? So, now, I wanted to bring the question to you:When is your preferred kickoff on Sunday:
