The Bachelor's Krystal Nielson is opening up about her near-death experience while giving birth to her sonRowan.
On Wednesday Dec. 3, the former reality star shared her son's birth story via Instagram, and revealed she experienced a complication which threatened her and her son's lives.
"On Friday, November 14th, we went in for a scheduled induction due to an umbilical vein varix — the same condition that prompted us to induce early with our daughter Andara," Nielson wrote. "By Sunday morning, 33 hours into the induction, I had only progressed from 1 cm to 3 cm despite the Foley balloon and four rounds of Cytotec. I was utterly exhausted and sleep deprived, and finally agreed to an epidural so they could break my water and (hopefully) speed things along."
Nielson says that 2 and 1/2 hours later, she was ready to push.
"Pushing started strong, but an hour in, something felt off. Rowan had stopped descending. After nearly 3 1/2 hours of pushing — 37 hours total into the induction -—I desperately looked at my midwife and said, 'He isn't coming,'" she continued. The OB came to check me and moments later bright red blood appeared. It felt like everything unraveled in seconds."
"Rowan was stuck low under my pelvic bone, wedged in a way that made vaginal delivery impossible," she added. "When the doctor tried to rotate him, she discovered that my uterus had ruptured. Within seconds, a full code team burst in and rushed me to the OR for an emergency C-section — awake."
Nielson says her son swallowed a large amount of blood during the rupture and was immediately rushed to the NICU following delivery. Initially, doctors worried he had brain damage due to lack of oxygen, but tests later confirmed the newborn was perfectly healthy.
"Not being able to see him, touch him, or even know if he would survive those first hours was a pain I can't put into words," she said.
Doctors later told Nielson that if she hadn't already been at the hospital when the rupture occurred, one or both of them would not have made it.
"Once he was out, they put me under to repair my uterus, which was in pieces — shredded, falling apart, and refusing stitches," Nielson continued. "Amazing doctors performed an absolute miracle and were able to save my uterus."
However, due to her high risk for another rupture, doctors advised Nielson and her husband MilesBowles not to have anymore children. The couple had planned on eventually having a third child, and Nielson said this news was "devastating."
She then explained that her son went through three days of therapeutic hypothermia to protect his brain as they waited for scans to confirm he did not have brain damage.
"I met my son for the first time when he was two days old, and finally held him on day four, once he was rewarmed and cleared of seizures or brain damage," she said. "On day 6, we talked out of the NICU together — mama, daddy, and our miracle baby — alive, healthy, perfect, and headed home to big sister Andara."
Nielson thanked friends, family, and fans for their support and shared that every year on Rowan's birthday, the family will lower themselves into ice-cold water together to honor his journey in the NICU.
She concluded, "Thank you for carrying us when we couldn't walk. We felt every prayer. We are forever changed, forever grateful."
