The Southwestern Athletic Conference switched to two divisions and a conference championship game in 1999. On Saturday, defending champion Jackson State will host Prairie View A&M with the winner advancing to the Celebration Bowl.
Jackson State continues to be the glamour team of SWAC football.
Prairie View A&M, as usual, is flying under the radar.
The SWAC East Division champion has captured the conference championship game in seven consecutive seasons, including Jackson State last year and in three of the past four years.
Prairie View A&M represents the West Division and has only one title (2009) in the first 26 years of the conference championship game.
Yet, Saturday’s SWAC championship game – the first matchup between the two programs since the 2021 title game – figures to be competitive, even with PVAMU (9-3) going into the lion’s den of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, where JSU (9-2) is 24-2 since 2021.
It marks the first time that both finalists enter the conference championship game with at least nine wins since 2014. The winner will secure a ticket to the 10th Celebration Bowl.
