Security units affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate, carried out a security operation targeting a site belonging to the Islamic State group in the town of Kanaker (a town in the Qatana area in the western countryside of Damascus).
The head of Internal Security in Rural Damascus province, Ahmad al-Dalati, said in a statement published by the Ministry of Interior on its Facebook page today, Wednesday, 3 December, that the operation came on the basis of what he described as “credible” intelligence information and close monitoring of the movements of Islamic State members over the past weeks.
During the operation, the units took full control of the site after a limited confrontation, resulting in the arrest of three people linked to the group’s cells and the seizure of ready-to-use explosive devices, silencers, as well as various weapons and large quantities of ammunition.
Documents and evidence were also found that prove the involvement of these individuals in “terrorist” activities, according to al-Dalati, who added that these materials are currently being analyzed and further investigations are being completed by the competent authorities.
Two previous operations in Idlib
On 1 December, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that it had carried out two security operations in Idlib province targeting cells affiliated with the Islamic State group, according to what the ministry published on its Facebook page.
The head of Internal Security in Idlib province, Brigadier General Ghassan Bakir, said the two operations were carried out in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate. Security forces raided locations suspected of being used as points for Islamic State cells, as part of an ongoing campaign to track the group’s activities in Idlib’s countryside.
The two operations, carried out in the Dana area (north of Idlib province) and west of Idlib city, led to the seizure of small arms and ammunition, in addition to explosive belts and ready-to-use improvised explosive devices.
During the raids, two individuals were killed after they “refused to surrender,” according to Bakir, while the remaining cell members were arrested. Initial investigations revealed the involvement of some of the detainees in killing a civilian and burying him near Ma’arrat Misrin (a town in the northern countryside of Idlib) in recent weeks.
Those arrested were referred to the competent authorities to continue the investigations in preparation for bringing them before the courts, at a time when the security campaign, which the Ministry of Interior says aims to “dry up the sources” of the group and curb its activity in areas under its control, is still ongoing.
Operations against the group
On 8 November, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the launch of a “wide-scale” security operation in several provinces, targeting Islamic State cells in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate.
The spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior, Nour al-Din al-Baba, said the security operation launched by the ministry against the Islamic State group included 61 raids across various Syrian provinces and resulted in 71 arrests, including leaders at different levels, as well as rank-and-file members accused of committing a number of crimes, including attacks on civilians and personnel of the Ministry of Defense.
The security operations also resulted in killing one Islamic State member and injuring one security officer, in addition to raiding ammunition and weapons depots and hideouts containing logistical equipment in several areas, as he put it.
The operation covered the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Homs, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Damascus and its countryside, and the Syrian desert (al-Badiya).
Islamic State activity on the rise
The Islamic State group announced that it was responsible for two assassinations in Homs and Hama on 28 November.
Through its “Sah al-Wagha” outlet, the group said its fighters targeted “a candidate for the former Syrian regime,” accompanied by a member of the “new government,” in the al-Tattan neighborhood, killing the former and injuring the latter, according to the group.
The group’s fighters also targeted a former member of what it called the “rejectionist militias” in the village of al-Mazraa (in the countryside of Homs) with automatic weapons, killing him.
The Islamic State group also announced that it carried out three operations in what it calls “Wilayat al-Khayr” (Deir Ezzor province), killing one government affiliate it described as a “spy” in al-Bukamal (a city in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor near the Iraqi border) and targeting two fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In its “al-Naba” newspaper, on 27 November, the group said that “the soldiers of the caliphate” killed a “spy for the Syrian regime” and wounded two members of what it called the “PKK militia” and damaged two of their vehicles in three separate operations.
The group also announced the assassination of what it called “a spy for the apostate Syrian regime” in the city of al-Bukamal, saying the “killed spy” had previously served as a fighter in the SDF before leaving it and becoming an agent for the current regime. According to the group’s account, he used his job selling spare parts to monitor the movements of Islamic State fighters and report their routes and locations in the area.
