The big difference? Kay was more of a control-and-contact-manager type in Japan, without necessarily seeing a huge spike in stuff, like what has been attributed to Ponce.
That said, a $12 million guarantee over two years is quite a bit more than I think a lot of folks were expecting. For a rebuilding White Sox club, it’s a wholly worthwhile risk with limited downside. And if Kay turns into the next Erick-Fedde-like find for the White Sox, then maybe they have a valuable trade piece going forward. Or they could win some games. Who is to say?
Sure seems like a certain tier of the starting pitcher market is moving this week, with Ponce, Weiss, Kay, and Alek Manaoh all signing. We also saw movement in the relief market, with Ryan Helsley and Devin Williams going off the board. The Winter Meetings start on Monday, so I wouldn’t expect this pace to slow down. We’ll see quite a few more moves across baseball this week.
