Appearing on the U.K. show This Morning, the singer admitted that she was strictly told not to physically hug the Princess of Wales during introductions at the Nov. 19 event. When the moment came, Jessie J instead saw a fellow mother who had gone through cancer, just like her.
"I was briefed not to, but...I just saw a mom that has also gone through cancer publicly, and I just wanted to give her a hug," explained Jessie.
"It was as simple as that. I didn't see her as the Princess of Wales, I mean obviously I did, and I was respectful...I said to her, ‘Can I give you a hug?’ and she received it."
Having the shared public experience, Jessie J felt connected to Princess Kate and wanted her to feel supported.
"I just said [to her], ‘It's inspiring.’ And I just...I know the days that she has maybe gone through, and I just wanted to give her a hug — mom to mom, human to human," the singer said.
In March 2024, the Princess of Wales announced in a personal video message that her notable absence was due to her cancer diagnosis. She was undergoing chemotherapy and having a planned abdominal surgery as part of her treatment.
As a result, Princess Kate heavily reduced her royal duties and public appearances. She completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and went into remission in early 2025.
The Royal Variety Performance was her first public red carpet appearance, alongside Prince William, in two years.
