Ben Johnson Clarifies His Comments on Caleb Williams and the Passing Game

One of my favorite things about the first year of following the Ben Johnson experience has been that he does not mince words. And when it comes to players, the Chicago Bears head coach is straight and to-the-point while not going overboard. It is a tough balance to strike, but one the first-year coach is handling well.

However, his commentary about Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and the passing game raised some eyebrows:

From Monday (transcription via Pro Football Talk): “We gotta fundamentally be correct. The primary receiver, when he’s open, we’ve got to make sure we hit him. And then, all of our pass catchers, we just harped on it today, we need to be more disciplined in our route detail. It’s not where it needs to be. Our depth’s not proper all the time. Our steps [aren’t]. Everybody has a role to play to get this pass game cleaned up. It’s not where it needs to be. We’re winning in spite of our passing game, not because of it and none of us are pleased with that right now.”

I don’t have any issue with what Ben Johnson said above because his eyes are seeing what the eyes of Bears fans are also witnessing. There have been far too many times when a Bears coach has shared their vision and it didn’t line up with what anyone else had seen. But that hasn’t been an issue with Johnson to this point of his Bears career.

HERE IS HOW BEN JOHNSON IS TRANSFORMING CALEB WILLIAMS’ GAME

As for Ben Johnson’s Tuesday commentary, it seemed to strike a different tone: (transcription via PFT): “I think when I made that comment yesterday, it’s easily to construe it as I’m not happy with the quarterback. That’s not the case whatsoever. He continues to get better each and every week, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how he played last week.”

He also chimed in with this:

“I know what the stats say. Throw those out the window. He’s doing a really good job managing the ballgame and that’s step No. 1 for the quarterback. He’s going to continue to get better. The process is really good right now with how he approaches the week. The way he’s taken the coaching, the way he’s applying the coaching. I’m very pleased with that. I think we’re going to continue to see him ascend whether the stats tell the story or not.”

For what it’s worth, I did not take Ben Johnson’s comments on Monday as a sign that he was unhappy with quarterback Caleb Williams. So if you are looking for me to frame this as the first crack in the armor at Halas Hall, keep it moving. As tempting as that angle would be, it just wouldn’t be accurate. With that being said, I did take Johnson’s Monday quote as a sign that he wants to see better results from Caleb Williams moving forward. Kudos to Ben for drawing up plays and scheming up open pass-catchers. Once QB1 figures out whatever is keeping his accuracy rate down in the dumps, it will be soooo over for opposing defensive backs.
