Chicago Cubs Sign Utility Man Scott Kingery

This afternoon, I said the following: “It’s pretty wild that we sit here on December 2, and the Cubs still have yet to make a single waiver claim or sign a player to a minor league deal. That’s their bread and butter, and I don’t even mean that as an insult!”

The Cubs were listening, clearly:

Cubs announce they signed INF Scott Kingery to a minor league contract with an invite to major league camp.

I guess beggars can’t be choosers when asking the Cubs to do any kind of waiver move or minor league deal …

Known as a name prospect in his younger days, Scott Kingery, now 31, has spent quite a bit more time at Triple-A than in MLB the last few years. In 2025, he played most of the season at Triple-A for the Angels, hitting .242/.302/.425/70 wRC+. He was closer to league average for the Phillies at Triple-A before that, but his big league slash line since 2019 is dreadful (.145/.205/.239/19 wRC+).

Ultimately, what you’re looking at with Kingery is something more like emergency depth than any kind of upside play or even a serious threat to win a job on the bench. To the positive, he can play any position on the field reasonably well, so if that emergency situation strikes in some kind of concentrated way, Kingery is protection at any spot. And I suppose there’s some remote chance he brings back the magic he showed in his younger days (or at least hits at a lightly-above-average clip at Triple-A, as he did in 2024), though I wouldn’t count on it.

It’s good to have guys like Kingery available in your organization. It’s not always so good if you actually wind up having to rely on them at the big league level for more than a game or two.

As an aside: back in the day, Kingery signed a $24 million pre-arb extension of the type that people ridicule as being far too team-friendly or under-market. Well, his story arc is precisely why it’s sometimes right for players to take the cash when they have a chance.
