Trying to choose cookware these days has started to feel like less of a relaxing, enjoyable experience and more like trying to dodge a minefield of buzzwords that up until recently we never associated with our pots and pans. For years, home cooks and chefs alike relied on Teflon-coated cookware that promised a slick, slippery surface on which eggs and other sticky foods would glide with ease, saving dinners everywhere from being a burnt-on, gluey mess. It modernized the way we cooked, and for a while, no one thought anything of it other than marveling at the fact that we could make near-perfect French omelets.

Alas, the romance was short-lived once further investigation revealed that Teflon, while undeniably non-stick, was loaded with PFOA, a type of PFAS considered highly toxic and capable of persisting indefinitely in the environment. This created a shift in the industry toward safer alternatives, such as ceramic nonstick coatings and other polymers, giving consumers more options to choose from when it comes to their cookware. The only trouble: people really love their non-stick. To try and pry consumers away from their beloved nonstick, brands like OurPlace and Caraway have all launched their own premium options that promise the same cooking experience without all the harmful chemicals.

FDA Issues Warning for Nine Additional Cookware Brands Over Concerns of Lead-Leaching

Of course, beyond opting for coated cookware, consumers have also always had the choice to stick with stainless steel or aluminum, and for a lot of chefs, they’re the better choice anyway. Unless they, too, become harbingers of toxicity that makes us want to do nothing more than melt into a puddle in the middle of the cookware aisle. Unfortunately, the FDA just added nine more brands to an ongoing list of aluminum and brass cookware that have been found to leach toxic levels of lead into food, rendering it unsafe for human consumption. In August, the FDA warned consumers about certain imported cookware that could leach significant levels of lead into food due to being made with aluminum alloys known as "Hindalium/Hindolium or Indalium/Indolium."

The list was then expanded in late October to include six additional brands, and now the FDA is adding nine more to that list, bringing the total to a whopping 19 brands. Although this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list, you can check out the newly added brands and how to identify them below:

If you have any of these brands in your cabinet, it’s highly recommended that you discard them immediately, as there are no known safe levels of exposure to lead. It’s also not a good idea to donate them. Even low levels of lead can cause toxicity, and symptoms might not be visible right away. At higher levels of lead exposure, people may experience fatigue, headache, stomach pain, vomiting, or neurologic changes. On the bright side, there are still plenty of great brands out there that make safe, effective cookware that you can feel confident about.

Brands like Made In, All-Clad, HexClad, and even pricier brands like Hestan are all great options if you’re looking for cookware that’s built to last without all the extras. And as always, you can stay up to date on any recalls and warnings by checking back here for the latest.
