ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State residents can now apply for help with heating their homes after the federal government shutdown delayed the opening of applications for over a month.
Enrollment opened on Monday for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Eligible people can get up to $996 in benefits, depending on how they heat their home.
Your eligibility for HEAP depends on your income, household size, heating source, and if the household contains a vulnerable member. You can learn how to apply and how much you may qualify for here. You can also apply in person at your county’s HEAP Local District Contact.
Households can get one Regular HEAP benefit per season, but could also be eligible for Emergency HEAP benefits if they are in danger of running out of heating fuel or having their utility services shut off. Applications for the additional emergency benefits will be accepted starting on Jan. 2.
More than 1.5 million households got Regular HEAP benefits last year. It’s provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Although the program is overseen by the state’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, it’s 100% federally funded.
