The Week 13 stat line for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams wasn’t pretty. He completed 47.2 percent of his passes, threw an ugly interception to a defensive lineman, posted season lows in yards per attempt (4.3) and yards per completion (9.1), and finished the day with a 56.9 passer rating which is a straight-up eyesore.
And yet, it is still fair to write about Caleb Williams as a player who is growing as a second-year quarterback. Of course, you can thank Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson for that particular anecdote.
Via The Athletic’s Mike Sando:
“The No. 1 thing that Ben Johnson is doing with Caleb is teaching him how to play quarterback,” a veteran play caller said. “He is not doing anything different with his throwing motion or anything like that. What is the down and distance? If it’s second-and-3, we don’t need to throw the fade here.”
If you’re wondering what it even means to teach someone how to play quarterback, don’t sweat. I’ve got you covered.
For starters, it means Ben Johnson isn’t babying Caleb Williams. Johnson continues to challenge his quarterback by throwing the kitchen sink at him. This is the type of thing good coaches do as they try to get the most out of developing quarterbacks. It is kin to the type of effort you’ll see quality teachers make with promising students. Do you remember growing up and having a teacher who was hard on you? If so, then just know they were probably acting that way in hopes that you could reach your full potential.

So what does this look like in a football sense? Instead of lightening his load or giving him easier concepts to work thorugh, Johnson keeps pushing his scheme with no caveats or shortcuts. This has been something we have been discussing since training camp and is an angle Matt has been harping on weekly in his 24-Hour Rule posts after Bears games. If Ben didn’t believe in Caleb, he wouldn’t be pushing him so hard. Hence, the head coach has worked his quarterback harder with each week. And while the numbers are lagging in some areas, it is all being done in the name of proper NFL development. This is what we wanted as Bears fans, right?
As Sando writes: “There are no guarantees it will work, but there are positive signs.”

An updated look at Caleb WIlliams’ season-long stats through 12 games:
230/396 (58.1 percent) 2,722 passing yards (6.9 yards per attempt) 17 touchdowns (4.3 TD%) 5 interceptions (1.3 INT%) 88.2 passer ratingCaleb Williams’ per-17 game season pace numbers look like this: 326/561, 3,856 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, 7 interceptions.
Three weeks ago, Williams was on pace ot be the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears franchise history. And while he isn’t on a 4,000-yard pace any more, the 3,838-yard season Erik Kramer posted in 1995 is reachable. It would be disappointing if Williams didn’t pass that mark and re-write the franchise record books. But I think I am willing to give up seeing that record fall if it meant that the Bears could win the NFC North and lock up the conference’s No. 1 seed.
DON’T LOOK NOW, BUT THE BEARS ARE CURRENTLY THE NFC’S NO. 1 SEED
On the one hand, Caleb Williams’ tumbling accuracy numbers are concerning. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson set a high bar for Williams in the beginning of the year when he mentioned a 70 percent completion rate being the goal. Williams won’t reach that number this season, but that doesn’t mean this year is an abject failure. Because despite his shortcomings in the accuracy department, Williams grades out well at Pro Football Focus when it comes to making Big-Time Throws (9th most) and limiting Turnover-Worthy Plays (28th among starters). Williams is developing while playing winning football. Threading that needle hasn’t been easy, and it won’t get easier with the Green Bay Packers looming on Sunday.
