The Israeli army raises alert level near the Syrian border

The commander of the Israeli army’s Northern Command, Rafi Milo, visited Israeli military sites along the border with Syria and Lebanon to conduct on-the-ground assessments and review the training of the forces deployed there.

The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday, 1 December, that Milo held a series of situational assessments with field commanders, after which he concluded that “the forces are at a high level of alert, defensively and operationally, and are prepared for any potential developments in the Syrian and Lebanese arenas.”

Milo said the army “will not allow terrorism to entrench itself along the border”, adding that the forces “will continue to act firmly and proactively to remove threats and attempts to target civilians in Israel before they materialize.”

He also referred to the recent operation carried out by the Israeli army against what he described as the Islamic Group, in the town of Beit Jinn (in the southwestern countryside of Damascus, near the occupied Syrian Golan Heights), during which six reserve soldiers were wounded.

Addressing the reservists serving in the sector, Milo told them they had “completed the mission successfully, arrested the suspects, and advanced to engage under fire”, expressing his appreciation for their “activity and repeated readiness.”

He stressed that the operation in Beit Jinn is part of “a series of wide counterterrorism operations in southern Syria”, considering that it demonstrates “the importance of preemptive action in the security zone and the value of forward defense.”

The Israeli army had bombed the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside on 28 November, after local residents clashed with an Israeli patrol that had arrested young men from the town, leading to the killing of 13 civilians and the wounding of 24 others.

Milo added, “We cannot wait for the enemy to attack first, we must take the initiative”, stressing the army’s commitment to “remaining a barrier between the population and the enemy, and to being the first to detect, respond, and defend.”

Although the Israeli army said those it detained in Beit Jinn belonged to a “terrorist group”, it released on Monday morning the young man Ibrahim al Saadi, one of those arrested by the Israeli army from Beit Jinn on 28 November.

Thirteen civilians, including women and children, were killed and 24 others were injured in the Israeli army’s shelling of the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside on 28 November.

The town witnessed movement of displacement toward neighboring towns, amid intensive flights of Israeli drones over the area, while the wounded remained trapped under the rubble caused by the shelling for a period of time before Israel allowed the Syrian Civil Defense to enter and rescue the injured.

The shelling, according to what activist Fahd Mohammad told Enab Baladi at the time, came after the Israeli army’s incursion into the town to arrest a number of young men, which led to clashes between young men from the town and the Israeli army, which announced that six of its soldiers were wounded.

According to information obtained by Enab Baladi, the Israeli army arrested three young men in the town.

The Times of Israel reported then that those wounded in the Israeli army were two officers and a reservist soldier who were seriously injured, another reservist soldier who was moderately wounded, and two reservist soldiers who sustained minor injuries.

In a statement, the Israeli army said that forces from Reserve Brigade 55 were carrying out an arrest operation targeting several people it described as “suspects from the Islamic Group”, who are active in the village of Beit Jinn in southern Syria.

The army considered in its statement that the suspects were engaged in promoting “terror plots against citizens of the State of Israel.”

Meanwhile, the Islamic Group, a Lebanese movement, denied any connection to the events and rejected the use of its name in any operation outside Lebanon.
