UA student founds the nation’s first collegiate sepsis awareness club

A UA student who survived sepsis founded the country’s first collegiate sepsis awareness club at the University, officially starting in January of 2026.

Sepsis is a medical emergency that a person can face when their body has a dangerous reaction to an infection. It can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.

Kimora Branch, a junior majoring in criminology and criminal justice, founded Sepsis Hope Initiative for National Education after having sepsis as a freshman and having post-sepsis syndrome as a sophomore.

“I didn’t even know what it was until I was diagnosed with it,” she said.

Branch said she was diagnosed with pneumonia and strep throat at the Student Health Center during her freshman year but that she wasn’t getting any better.

“When I finally could get in touch with the doctor, by that point, I was already at severe sepsis, and he told me to go to an ER,” she said. “And then, my health kind of spiraled down the hill from that moment.”

After becoming sick again during sophomore year, Branch reached out to Sepsis Alliance, a patient advocacy organization, to seek help. She then became involved in the organization’s advocacy efforts.

“They were so inspired by what I had to say about my experience, that they asked me if I wanted to go join them in Capitol Hill,” she said.

Branch said her efforts with the organization include trying to pass Lulu’s Law, a bill aiming to develop a “U.S. strategy for responding to sepsis and launches a program of sepsis information repositories.”

Kaylie Cline, a sophomore majoring in marketing, is the treasurer of SHINE. She said that the club will educate and serve as a support group for people who have been affected by the disease.

“Tuscaloosa, where I’m already going to school, would be a great place to start,” Branch said. “Hopefully, we can instill my club, SHINE, in other colleges throughout the United States.”
