For iconic filmmaker James Cameron, the Avatar universe of Pandora and the Na'vi came to life long before audiences saw it in 2009.
"[At] 19, I dreamed the world," the Terminator writer and director told Matthew Belloni on his The Town podcast.
However, even after it invaded his subconscious mind, it was another 22 years before he wrote the script for what would become the first film. But he was in the throes of creating his blockbuster hit Titanic in 1995, and he didn't revisit Avatar seriously until he started making the movie ten years later. Since then, he's either been working on the Avatar films or thinking about them while doing other projects.
On December 19, 2025, the third film in the franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released. Despite Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water earning more than $5 billion globally, Cameron is still nervous about the third film's success.
"I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money," he told Belloni. "The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?"
He claims that if it doesn't, he can "absolutely" walk away from the franchise he's poured so much of his years and energy into.
"If this is where it ends, cool," he said. When the issue of unresolved plotlines arose, Cameron said he would "write a book" to give fans a satisfying ending. He understands that there are many reasons why the film may not do as well as the first two in theaters.
"People tend to dismiss sequels," he noted. "Unless it's the third Lord of the Rings film and you want to see what happens to everybody. Which, in my mind, this is the culmination of a story arc. But that may not be how the public sees it."
Cameron was also quick to admit another "1-2 punch." Theaters were already struggling with the advent of streaming when the pandemic hit.
"People have redirected -- their habit patterns have redirected to streaming, to prioritizing access, and availability, and comfort over venturing out, going to the dedicated experience," he said. "People are still going to the movies, but it's only 75% of what it was in '19, and it hasn't rebounded."
"Now it has to be an event, so that's really narrowing," he added. With Deadline predicting an opening weekend of $110 million, we'll see if Cameron ends up having to follow through with that book.
