Windsor shakes off earlier mistakes to punch ticket to title game

WINDSOR — The path may have been just a tad bit unexpected.

But, as the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard Saturday afternoon at H.J. Dudley Field, the destination was exactly what the Windsor football team has zeroed in on all season.

The top-seeded, unbeaten Wizards overcame some uncharacteristic mistakes to rally in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 win against fifth-seeded Holy Family in the Class 3A state tournament semifinals.

With that win, Windsor ran its flawless record to 13-0 and punched its ticket to the state finals where it will face second-seeded Pomona (12-1) at 10 a.m. Dec. 6 at Canvas Stadium on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins.

Until the final 12 minutes, the Wizards' hopes of extending their unbeaten campaign and contending for their fifth title in program history was very much in jeopardy.

After Windsor's star senior running back Adrian Czyszczon coughed up the ball for the first time all season, Holy Family (11-2) drove the ball 53 yards to break a 7-7 tie with a 31-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kaden Hopkin to sophomore receiver Nick Leopardi.

The huge play — easily the Tigers' biggest offensive play of the game — put Holy Family up 14-7 with 4 minutes, 3 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Tigers' steady defense forced a quick Windsor three-and-out on the ensuing possession.

Perhaps trying to deliver a dagger, Holy Family regained the ball on the Wizards' 47 and Hopkin stepped back in the pocket and again looked downfield.

This time, Windsor's senior defensive leader, linebacker Isaiah Cronk, stepped in front of a pass intended for sophomore Kai Osburn.

Cronk completely stole the Tigers' burgeoning momentum and raced back to the Holy Family 37 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

The Wizards again were on the verge of stifling their championship hopes when a personal foul resulted in Windsor facing a 4th-and-25 on its own 48. But, a Tigers roughing the kicker penalty on a Wizards punt attempt gave Windsor new life.

The Wizards proceeded to drive the ball 52 yards in less than 3 minutes to tie the game with 10:05 left on senior quarterback Mason Moore's17-yard option keeper into the end zone.

As it had done all afternoon, Windsor's vaunted defense continued to thwart Holy Family's normally potent offense, enabling the Wizards offense to reclaim possession, with the chance to take the lead, on the Tigers' 46-yard line with 8:41 left.

Czyszczon fully made amends for his rare fumble, as he carried the ball five consecutive times during the winning drive. He powered one yard into the end zone to put Windsor up 21-14 with 7:04 left.

The Wizards' defense secured the victory by forcing a turnover on downs near midfield with 3:53 left. Windsor's offensive line-led bulldozer offense ran out the rest of the clock.
