Glenside, Pennsylvania, native Sofia Bell has verbally committed to swim and study at Drexel University as a member of the class of 2030. Germantown Academy Sports, where Bell attends school and competes for both the high school and club teams, made the announcement on Instagram:

    Top SCY Times:

    100 Backstroke: 1:02.59 200 Backstroke: 2:13.02 200 IM: 2:15.38 400 IM: 4:51.18 200 Freestyle: 2:02.36 500 Freestyle: 5:17.66 1650 Freestyle: 17:54.94

Bell is quite versatile as she swims just about everything, and over the past few seasons she has honed in on backstroke, IM, and distance freestyle. Her biggest time drops this season came in the 200 back and 500 free, where she went from 2:15.52 to 2:13.02 and 5:20.24 to 5:17.66. She also produced some marginal time drops in the 100 back, improving from 1:02.73 to 1:02.59, and the 400 IM, going from 4:51.22 to 4:51.18.

Her best time in the 200 free, 2:02.36, stems from November 2023, while her bests in the 200 IM (2:15.38) and mile (17:54.94) were set in February and March 2024.

Bell is a three-time qualifier for the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships. The competition serves as the region’s equivalent to a typical state meet, though Middle Atlantic Swimming operates as one of two USA Swimming Local Swimming Committees covering Pennsylvania. The Middle Atlantic LSC encompasses eastern and central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and all of Delaware, while western Pennsylvania falls under the separate Allegheny Mountain LSC.

At the 2025 edition of the meet, Bell finished 19th in the 1650 free with a season best of 18:17.49. She also touched 24th in the 1000 free (11:05.88), 47th in the 500 free (5:25.32),46th in the 400 IM (4:51.41), 51st in the 200 back with her current personal best, and 71st in the 200 IM (2:17.21). Her best-ever result at the meet is her eighth-place finish in the mile in 2023.

Drexel is led by head coach Nathan Lavery, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the program. Last season, the Dragons finished six out of nine teams at the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Conference Championships.

The conference meet scores ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals, and it took times of 1:51.95, 4:59.88, and 17:20.06 to score in the freestyles, while times of 55.91 and 2:02.30 were required in the backstrokes, and 2:04.38 and 4:27.99 were needed in the IMs. Based on those benchmarks, Bell’s best opportunity to score would be the 1650, assuming she’s able to chip off some time over the next year and a half.

On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Bell would have ranked fifth in both the 400 IM and 1650 free, seventh in the 200 back and 500 free, and ninth in the 100 back. She will overlap two seasons with Brittany Corbett, who led the team in the 1650 free with a time of 16:36.67, and one year with Skye Bilger, who was 4:31.17 in the 400 IM last year, which should provide her some strong training partners in her best events.

Bell joins a five-strong recruiting class for the Dragons, which includes sprint freestyler Alicia Taylor, breaststroker Sophia Sileo-Magliari, distance freestyler/IMer Emma Watts, and butterfly/backstroker Kailey dela Cruz.
