It’s that time of year again. Thanksgiving is over and the holidays are approaching, which means that certain Christmas songs become nearly inescapable for the next month or so.
Elton John knows all about this. He co-wrote--with lyricist Bernie Taupin--and recorded his own holiday classic “Step into Christmas,” originally released in November 1973. Like many holiday classics, the song has had an incredible shelf life and continues to spark airplay and interest every December.

Back in 2009, it was ranked as the ninth-most-played Christmas song of the 2000s in the U.K. and in 2023 it was certified triple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry for sales and streams of 1,800,000 equivalent units. Over in the U.S. in September 2021, the Recording Industry Association of America certified it gold for sales and streams of 500,000 equivalent units.
Elton took to Instagram on Nov. 29 to post a video mocking his inescapable holiday classic in a hilarious clip. The video shows the “Rocket Man” in his kitchen wearing a designer sweat suit. The clip begins with a black slide that reads, “It must be that time of year again…,” then Elton is shown opening various cabinets, drawers and appliances. The catch is, every time Elton opens something, “Step Into Christmas” is heard, leaving the star shrieking at his own record. The music only stops once Elton closes the door or drawer.
The video is accompanied with the caption, “If you can’t escape it, you might as well Step Into Christmas! Who’s ready?”
Fans reacted favorably to the post, with Elton’s friends at Record Safari posting, “???.”
Another fan reacted to the news that Elton has announced a special live gig next year. “Elton John, as your Brazilian fan, my heart is overjoyed that you will be performing at Rock in Rio.I’m counting down the days. I love your music ?❤️❤️,” they wrote.
“My oven will not stop playing Harmony (2014 Remaster) and that's ok w/ me (my house is toast),” another fan posted.
“You legend. I’m ready to step into Christmas! ❤️?,” yet another one wrote.
“Where do I get these cabinets.. I need Elton singing everytime I open them!” added another.
