Scratch one of the best late-inning options off the board, as Ryan Helsley is headed to Baltimore.
Jeff Passan reports that it’s a two-year deal with an opt-out in the middle, AKA a one-year deal with a player option for the second year:
Closer Ryan Helsley and the Baltimore Orioles are in agreement on a two-year contract with an opt-out after the first season, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. Helsley, who fielded interest from teams to convert to a starter, will be the ninth-inning option for Baltimore.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) November 29, 2025The whole converting-to-starter thing never made much sense, and that certainly isn’t what would’ve happened with the Cubs (who were reportedly interested in Helsley). Him signing as a closer on a deal that could allow him to hit the market again in a year is what always made the most sense, given his down second half in 2025, but his longstanding success before that.
The Cubs have already managed to add Phil Maton, by the way, which does bolster the pen. But there are so many vacancies there that it’s hard to imagine them standing pat from here, outside of the upside/low-risk/reclamation types we know they will be pursuing either way.
With Helsley gone, they will have to look elsewhere for a late-inning option – Devin Williams? Pete Fairbanks? Brad Keller? – and it’ll be interesting to see if this is a precursor to other dominos falling.
