Another Unacceptable Loss, Historically Bad Defense, More Tre Jones, and Other Bulls Bullets

The New Orleans Pelicans were on a nine-game losing streak and 2-15 to start the year.

The Charlotte Hornets were on a seven-game losing streak and 4-14 to start the year.

The Chicago Bulls lost to both. Remember when this team was 6-1?

Before we address the team’s latest flop, let’s do some housekeeping. While the Bulls were already eliminated from the NBA Cup heading into Friday’s game, the loss marked another unceremonious end for the franchise in the league’s annual tournament. They have now failed to make the knockout round in each of the competition’s first three installments, and this comes after winning their first Cup matchup of the season in impressive fashion. They beat the New York Knicks, only to drop games against the Bucks, Heat, and Hornets. In the end, they finished dead last in the East’s Group C with a point differential of -49. The only team in the conference to finish with a worse point differential was the two-win Washington Wizards at -77. With the Bulls failing to move on, the league has added the final two games to its calendar. While the tournament continues during the second week of December, the Bulls will face off against the same two teams that just took them down. They will face the Hornets on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. CT on the road, and they will welcome the Pelicans to the United Center on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. CT. All things considered, that feels like a generous hand to be dealt over a month into the season … but can we really say that after this last week? Indeed, as much as I want to call these previous two losses “unacceptable,” I’m not sure I can when one team simply hasn’t proven to be much better than the other. The Bulls have genuinely performed like one of the league’s worst over the last couple of weeks. They are 3-8 over their last 11 games with a -8.1 net rating, which is good for 24th in the NBA. The offense’s field goal percentage (46.2) has dropped into the NBA’s bottom 10, while the defense has allowed a league-high 129.6 points per game. In fact, the Bulls have now given up 120+ points in 11 straight games, which is something we haven’t seen a team do in the last 35 years (h/t CHSN). In other words, we can officially coin this Bulls defense “historically bad.” To be honest, I would almost rather see the Bulls embark on another gauntlet schedule. It feels like playing a Cleveland or Denver again has a better chance of awakening something in this group. Instead, they continue to have a stretch that looks pretty easy on paper, with Indiana and Brooklyn making up three of their next four games. Will they continue to go into these games overconfident and get punched in the mouth? What is going to light a fire under this group? While you’d like to think back-to-back embarrassing losses would do the trick, I’m not so sure they have learned their lesson. After all, both came after a loss to the Jazz and a near loss to the Wizards. Mandatory Credit: Peter Creveling-Imagn Images So … what happens if the downward spiral continues? Remember, this season was supposed to be about development and evaluation. If they can’t seem to figure things out, how fast might the trade rumors mount, and how quickly might Billy Donovan drastically change up the rotation? Could we begin to see even more Noa Essengue? Would there ever be a discussion about having Nikola Vucevic come off the bench? What about Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White’s availability? Do you start to make phone calls sooner or later? A lot of these storylines have been put on hold thanks to a better-than-expected start. The last three Ayo Dosunmu games have been bizarre. He drops 8 points in the tight win over the Wizards before leading the team with 28 points on an 11-16 showing against the Pelicans. Then, in last night’s loss, he scored a season-low 5 points in less than 24 minutes of action. I have a feeling this deep guard rotation is throwing everyone for a loop. As good as Coby White has looked upon his return, it’s made for a strange adjustment period. There is clearly a balance that this group is trying to find. Speaking of which, I wonder if less Tre Jones is part of the problem. He is playing nearly 5 minutes fewer per game over the last four contests. Another excellent ball mover and decision-maker, Jones provides a level of maturity that it feels like this team really needs. Not to mention, he is one of their better on-ball defenders. He may not have a great size advantage, but he hustles hard on that end and has a knack for cutting off passing lanes. I get that you need Coby White and Josh Giddey in the starting lineup, but could Jones play a little more alongside both? He worked well with Giddey earlier this year!

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 29, 2025 The Pacers have been a complete mess on both sides of the ball, and they know it. This appears to be a full-blown tank year for the franchise as they wait for Tyrese Haliburton to get healthy. They average the third-fewest points in the league and shoot an NBA-worst from both the field and behind the arc. On the other side of the ball, they also allow 54.4 points in the paint per game, which should be great news for a Bulls team that has averaged the third-most per game (55.1). Nevertheless, would anyone be shocked if they found a way to lose again? I can see the Bennedict Mathurin 40-point game now! It also feels worth mentioning that Indiana is fresh off a win over the Wizards AND just lost to the two top teams in the East by only 5 points or fewer. It’s not like this group doesn’t play hard or fields a competitive/physical rotation. If anything, this was the matchup I was far more worried about than meetings with the Pelicans and Hornets. So, yeah, that’s concerning! The Bulls have dropped into the quadrant of woe …

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 29, 2025 The Bears’ best player from this week was the man in the middle! Much like the Bulls, the Blackhawks have also hit a bump in the road. Should they try to solve the problem by sending one of their youngsters back to Rockford? Michael has another pitcher for the Cubs to consider on the trade market.
