Oscar-Winning Steven Spielberg Collaborator Dies at 88

Sir Tom Stoppard, the legendary British playwright whose work reshaped modern theater and earned him both Oscar and Golden Globe wins for Shakespeare in Love, has died at age 88.

His agents told the BBC that Stoppard “died peacefully at home in Dorset, surrounded by his family,” calling him “one of the UK’s best-known playwrights” and honoring his unmistakable artistic legacy.

“He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language,” United Agents said in a statement. “It was an honour to work with Tom and to know him.”

A Hugely Influential Voice in Modern Theater

Stoppard first broke through with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, the comedic existential riff on Hamlet that instantly established him as a brilliant theatrical mind. Throughout his career, he continued crafting sharp, emotionally rich plays, including The Real Thing and Arcadia, works now considered modern classics.

Across six decades, Stoppard became known for his dazzling wordplay, philosophical depth, and ability to intertwine humor with heartbreak, qualities that made him a fixture of both London’s West End and Broadway.

Beyond the stage, Stoppard made a lasting mark on film. Alongside his Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning script for Shakespeare in Love, he co-wrote the Oscar-nominated Brazil and adapted J.G. Ballard’s Empire of the Sun for Steven Spielberg.

His screenwriting career included a remarkable run of literary adaptations, among them The Russia House, Billy Bathgate, Enigma and the 2012 highly stylized version of Anna Karenina.

He also penned the acclaimed 2012 HBO miniseries Parade’s End, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and later adapted Tulip Fever.

Stoppard was frequently sought after in Hollywood as an uncredited script doctor as well. According to Variety, Stoppard did uncredited rewrites for the films Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, Sleepy Hollow and K-19: The Widowmaker.

George Lucas and Spielberg even hoped he would write the fourth Indiana Jones film.

Stoppard is survived by his four sons: Oliver, Barny, Bill, and Ed.
